Nate per distinguersi
Vita (di scaffale) a colori e protezione dell’ambiente: AMB interpreta il proprio ruolo di produttore di vaschette per alimenti con verve e originalità.
AMB è un converter di San Daniele (UD) noto per la qualità dei prodotti e per il gusto della sperimentazione e della ricerca sui materiali (suffragate dai rapporti consolidati con l’Università di Udine) in merito alla produzione di contenitori e vaschette barriera per alimenti.
Le soluzioni di confezionamento messe in campo da AMB testimoniano da sempre un’attenzione particolare alle problematiche correlate alla corretta conservazione dei cibi ma anche a quegli aspetti di immagine che concorrono a promuovere i marchi sul mercato, facendo breccia sui potenziali consumatori, grazie all’originalità e alla fantasia. Ne sono un valido esempio le vaschette stampate flexo a colori vivaci che riproducono di volta in volta gialli limoni maturi o fresche insalatine verdi (ma c’è ovviamente la massima libertà creativa nel scegliere il soggetto più adatto).
Partendo da materiali certificati e testati da tempo (APET, polistirolo barrierato, PP barrierato con EVOH), da una tecnologia produttiva ormai assodata, che assicura tra l’altro massima libertà di forme e formati, AMB ha deciso di reinventare le vaschette per alimenti, facendole uscire dall’anonimato. I fondi stampati (la stampa è ovviamente a sandwich per prevenire il contatto dell’inchiostro con gli alimenti) possono ospitare tutte le necessarie informazioni di legge e trovano un giusto complemento nei top, ottenendo così contenitori capaci di distinguersi sugli scaffali della grande distribuzione.
“Plasticambiente”
Altra novità proposta da AMB riguarda l’impiego di PLA (polilattide) nella produzione di vaschette per prodotti freschi e semi-freschi. Si tratta di un materiale decisamente innovativo e interessante per prestazioni e rese: trasparente, rigido, facilmente termoformabile e dalla grande stabilità dimensionale. È stato scelto, anzi adottato, da AMB per le sue caratteristiche e la sua natura di materiale compostabile. Dato che deriva interamente da fonti naturali e rinnovabili come il mais o le patate, degrada molto velocemente (58 giorni), non contiene additivi e può essere incenerito senza problemi: ecco perché si rivela adatto a prodotti che abbiano vita breve, come i contenitori per alimenti e il monouso. Un materiale la cui scelta denota la sensibilità per l’ambiente e che può essere un valido aiuto in tutte le comunità.
Una proposta, quella di AMB, che rimanda certo a considerazioni di più ampio respiro. È infatti doveroso precisare che, oggi, il PLA viene distribuito da Cargill Dow, che lo ha prodotto fino ad ora in un impianto pilota ma che solo di recente ne ha avviato la produzione su scala industriale.
AMB ha scelto di utilizzarlo sulle proprie linee facendo un investimento in prospettiva, nonostante fino ad ora abbia scontato alcuni limiti in relazione ai costi e ai quantitativi disponibili. Attualmente è proposto ai grandi utilizzatori come alternativa sensata per ridurre, in una certa misura, sprechi e inquinamento. Inoltre, unita da un profondo legame con il territorio in cui opera, AMB ha considerato il PLA un nuovo stimolo alla gestione più consapevole delle risorse naturali: come non pensare, infatti, alle possibilità di sviluppo dell’agricoltura, che potrebbe essere coinvolta nella produzione della “materia prima” destinate a impieghi alternativi e, per questo, meno dipendente dai contributi erogati in sede comunitaria? L’adozione, peraltro, di una delle linee di contenitori realizzati con PLA può essere il segnale di una presa di coscienza collettiva nei confronti di uno sviluppo più equilibrato, in grado di stimolare la sensibilità dei consumatori finali nei confronti dell’ambiente, patrimonio comune da salvaguardare in ogni modo.
Born to distinguish itself
Colorful (shelf) life and environmental protection: AMB interprets its role as producer of food trays with verve and originality.
AMB is a San Daniele-based converter (UD) known for the quality of its products and for its verve for experimenting with and devising of materials (aided by its consolidated relations with the University of Udine) for the production of barrier containers and trays for foodstuffs.
The packaging solutions fielded by AMB eternally bear witness to a special attention to the problems related to the correct preservation of food but also to those questions of image that contribute to promoting brands on the market, winning over potential consumers thanks to originality and imagination. The brightly colored flexo trays, in turn showing ripe yellow lemons and fresh green salads, are a valid example (but there is obviously also the greatest creative freedom in choosing the most suited subject).
Starting off from materials certified and tested in time (APET, barriered polystyrene, EVOH barriered PP) by a tried and tested production technology - that among other things ensures the max freedom in shapes and formats – AMB has decided to reinvent trays for foodstuffs, making them less anonymous. The printed bases (the print is obviously “sandwich” to prevent the ink coming into contact with the foodstuff) can host all the information laid down by law, a suitably complementary top being added: that is we think we can claim to having devised containers capable of standing out on the shelves of broadscale distribution.
“Plasticenvironment”
The other new feature proposed by AMB concerns the usage of PLA (polylattide) in the production of trays for fresh and semifresh products. This is a fairly innovatory material and truly interesting in terms of performance and yield: transparent, rigid, easily heatformable and with great dimensional stability. It was chosen or rather adopted for its characteristics and its nature as a compostable material. Given that it is entirely derived from natural and renewable sources like sweetcorn or potatoes, it deteriorates very quickly (58 days), does not contain additives and can be incinerated without any problems: this is why it is considered suited for products that have a short lifespan, such as containers for foodstuffs as well as disposables. The choice of this material reveals an environmental sensibility and may possibly constitute a valid aid in all types of communities.
A proposal that of AMB that certainly leads on to broader considerations. One should in fact state that today PLA is distributed by Cargill Dow, that has produced it up to now in a pilot plant but that has only recently started up production on an industrial scale.
AMB has chosen to use it on their lines, making a prospective investment, despite having up to now been subjected to some of its limitations in terms of cost and quantities available. For the time being it is being proposed to largescale users as a sensible alternative for somewhat reducing waste and pollution. Being deeply attached to the area on which they operate, AMB also consider it a means of stimulating a greater awareness in the administration of natural resources: one only need in fact think of its possibilities of development in agriculture, that could be involved in the production of “raw materials” for alternative uses and, for this, less dependent on EC funding. What is more the concern is of the opinion that the adoption of one of the lines of containers made in PLA could indicate an enhanced collective awareness of the needs for a more balanced development, capable of sensitising the end consumer as regards the environment, constituting a heritage to be saved by all means.
Avvolgitrici automatiche e semiautomatiche
L’avvolgitrice automatica orizzontale Ring è prodotta da Area (Rodano Millepini, MI) in diversi formati a seconda del prodotto da avvolgere: da un diametro minimo dell’anello di avvolgimento di 400 mm (per pacchetti di cornici, profili, fasci di tubi) a un diametro di 600, 1.000, 1.400 mm (perfetto per l’imballaggio di porte, finestre, pacchi di lamiera stesa e ondulata e simili) fino a diametri maggiori di 1.800, 2.100 e 2.500 mm, per l’avvolgimento di pacchi di pannelli di legno, materiale isolante e, più in generale, per pacchi di grandi dimensioni.
L’avvolgitrice semiautomatica orizzontale R9, studiata per piccole produzioni o per fasi di lavorazione in cui è richiesta la presenza dell'operatore, funziona premendo un pedale e introducendo manualmente il prodotto nella macchina. È prodotta con diametri dell'anello di 400, 600, 1.000 e 1.500 mm, ed è dotata di una rulliera a rulli folli in ingresso e in uscita. La velocità di avvolgimento è regolabile.
Automatic and semiautomatic wrapping machines
The automatic Ring horizontal wrapping machine is produced by Area (Rodano Millepini, MI) in different sizes depending on the product to be wrapped: from a min diameter of the wrapping ring of 400 mm (for packs of frames, sections, bundles of tubes) at diameters of 600, 1,000 and 1,400 mm (perfect for packaging doors, windows, packs of straight laminates and corrugates and the like) up to the max diameter of 1,800, 2,100 and 2,500 mm for wrapping packs of wood panels, insulating material and, more in general, for largescale packs.
The semiautomatic R9 horizontal strech machine, designed for small batches or processes where an operator needs to be present, works by pressing a foot pedal and manually introducing the product into the machine. Built with a choice of ring diameters (400, 600, 1,000 and 1,500 mm), it has an idle-roller conveyor system for both infeed and outfeed. Adjustable wrapping speed.
Terminali portatili veloci
PSC (soluzioni integrate nei sistemi di identificazione automatica) propone nuovi Falcon 4410 e 4420, robusti terminali portatili per la raccolta dati in modalità batch e wireless con sistema operativo Windows CE NET. Distribuiti in Italia da Tradex (Gallarate, VA), i nuovi terminali sono stati creati per ottimizzare la velocità e l’efficienza delle applicazioni nella gestione dei dati e il controllo dell’inventario nelle attività di retail in store e nel processo completo della supply chain, consentendo la condivisione e l’elaborazione dei dati in tempo reale.
Falcon 4410 e Falcon 4420 combinano in un unico strumento portatile ed ergonomico la potenza e la flessibilità di Windows CE NET e del microprocessore Intel Xscale 400 MHz con la trasmissione dati in RF e la lettura tramite scanner laser. In particolare, Falcon 4410 è stato studiato per stare in una mano, grazie alla comoda impugnatura, mentre il Falcon 4420 è ideale per tutte le applicazioni che richiedono un intenso utilizzo dello scanner. Entrambi i terminali, dotati di beeper da 90 dB e grado di protezione IP54, sono caratterizzati da uno schermo VGA sensibile al tatto e da una tastiera alfanumerica a 26 tasti. Integrati nella serie Falcon 4400, i software Internet Explorer e Pocket Inbox consentono agli utenti di connettersi velocemente alle applicazioni Web e ai sistemi di trasmissione dati esistenti in azienda. Infine, grazie al supporto delle principali LAN wireless di tipo 802.11b, inclusa Cisco Aironet, la serie offre piena interoperabilità con le infrastrutture radio compatibili WiFi.
Speedy portable terminals
PSC (integrated solutions in automatic identification systems) has presented its new Falcon 4410 and 4420, robust portable terminals for batch and wireless mode data collection with Window CE NET operating system. Distributed in Italy by Tradex (Gallarate VA), the new terminals have been created to optimize the speed and the efficiency of data processing and stocktaking applications in retail and store activities and in the complex process of the supply chain, enabling real time data processing and data sharing. Falcon 4410 and Falcon 4430 combine in a sole portable and ergonomic tool the power and the flexibility of Windows CE NET and Intel Xscale 400 Mhz microprocessors with RF data transmission and laser scanning. In particular, Falcon 4410 has been devised to be conveniently held in one hand, thanks to the handy grip, while Falcon 4420 is ideal for all applications that require intense scanner usage.
Both terminals, fitted with a 90 dB beeper IP54 grade protection, feature a VGA touch sensitive screen and a 26 key alphanumeric keyboard. Integrated in the Falcon 4400 one has internet Explorer and Pocket Inbox software, enabling users to connect up speedily to Web applications and the data transmission systems already existing in the company. Lastly, thanks to the support of the main wireless type 802.11b LANs including Cisco Aironet, the Falcon 4400 terminals series offers full interoperability with WiFi radio compatible infrastructures.

Coatem si presenta ad Ipack-Ima con il nuovo estrusore CE 14/20-E 4 per adesivi alto-fondenti e per materie plastiche, pensato per laboratori o piccole produzioni, e caratterizzato da facilità di utilizzo.
L’azienda di Corsico (MI), inoltre, amplia la propria offerta di impianti di fusione e accessori ad alta tecnologia per colle a caldo, articoli per i quali è distributore della società UES AG.
Si tratta, in particolare, della serie Zaffiro, dotata di un controllo elettronico logico che permette di visualizzare, con sistema di autodiagnosi, eventuali anomalie del sistema, di accendersi e spegnersi a orari prefissati e, in caso di assistenza, di scaricare la pressione residua della vasca, nel rispetto delle normative vigenti.
Extruders and hot-melt systems
Coatem is present at Ipack-Ima with a new user-friendly CE 14/20-E 4 extruder for hot-melt adhesives and for plastics, devised for workshops and small batches.
The Corsico based company (MI), has also extended its range of hi tech hot-melt systems and accessories for hot glues which distributes for UES AG.
We specifically mention the Zaffiro, fitted with logic electronic control that enables any system malfunctions to be shown up through an autodiagnosis system, to switch on and off at set times and, in the event of servicing, to unload the residual pressure from the tank, all this while conforming to the standards in force.
Eventi per il case-ready
Dal 4 al 7 febbraio si è svolto l’incontro “2003 European Case-Ready Fresh Meat Workshops & Seminar”, organizzato da Cryovac Europe presso il proprio centro espositivo Packforum di Parigi-Roissy (si veda il box).
Davanti a una nutrita platea di imprenditori, tecnici e giornalisti, i relatori di Cryovac e di altre importanti aziende del settore hanno affrontato il tema del Case-Ready, confrontando tecnologie alternative di confezionamento e facendo il punto sulla manutenzione preventiva, nonché sulle possibili strategie di marketing.
Un appuntamento di rilievo, visto anche il crescente ricorso al confezionamento Case-Ready, soprattutto nel mercato delle carni fresche: nel nostro continente, in particolare, negli ultimi cinque anni si è registrato un incremento del 15% l’anno.
Innovazioni di prodotto - Cryovac Sealed Air Corporation (la cui sede italiana è ubicata a Passirana di Rho, MI) presenta inoltre nuove soluzioni per il confezionamento dei prodotti alimentari.
• In primo luogo, Cryovac ha puntato sul potenziamento della propria gamma “SlicePak” (1), sia in termini di capacità produttiva, grazie all’impiego di macchine ad alta velocità, sia di plus di prodotto, con l’introduzione di sistemi ad apertura facilitata, dei film barriera stampati e dei vassoi (chiamati BFS, ossia supporti barrier foam) colorati.
La linea rinnovata, ora disponibile in diverse dimensioni e con i BFS metallizzati in argento e oro, consente così una maggiore differenziazione di prodotti quali carni affettate/affumicate, formaggio e pesce.
• Fra le altre novità del 2003, ricordiamo il sacco barriera termoretraibile Cryovac BB7050 (2), ad alta resistenza meccanica e con una buona saldabilità, ideale per prodotti che richiedono un’alta protezione come carni affumicate e processate, formaggi e carni fresche.
• I sacchi Cryovac TBG (3) per carni fresche con osso sono ora disponibili con stampa a colori per ottenere una migliore identificazione del marchio.
• È stata ampliata la gamma di pad assorbenti con Lite-Loc Plus, particolarmente adatto per il prepadding automatico.
• Ricordiamo infine Cryovac U-BRT (Ultra Barrier Rigid Trays, 4), che apre ai retailer nuove opportunità per ottimizzare il confezionamento a costi contenuti.
Case-Ready events
The 4 to 7 February witnessed the encounter “2003 European Case-Ready Fresh Meat Workshops & Seminar”, organized by Cryovac Europe at its Packforum centre at Parigi-Roissy (see box). Before a numerous audience made up of entrepreneurs, technicians and journalists, speakers for Cryovac and other important sector concerns tackled the subject of Case-Ready, comparing alternative packaging technologies and reviewing preventive maintenance and possible marketing strategies. A key event, given also the increased resorting to Case-Ready, aboveall in the fresh meat market: in Europe in particular in the last five years an increase of 15% a year has been registered.
Product innovations - Cryovac Sealed Air Corporation (Italian headquarters at Passirana di Rho, MI) will be presenting new solutions for packaging food products.
• Cryovac “SlicePak” offer (1) continues to expand. Recent developments include high speed equipment, an easy-opening feature, printed films and colored barrier foam supports. Now the SlicePak offer also includes several new sizes, as well as Gold or Silver metallized foam supports, thus offering customers many new ways to differentiate sliced products like as the smoked and processed meat, cheese and fish segments.
• Among the other new items, we remind Cryovac BB7050 barrier bag (2), an improved high abuse bag, with exceptional sealability for increased product safety, ideal for smoked & processed meat, cheese and fresh meat products requiring high protection.
• Cryovac TBG bags (3) offers optimal protection for bone-in primal, now available in printed versions to enhance pack presentation and product branding of bone-in fresh meat products.
• The range of Lite-Loc Plus absorbent food pads, ideal for automatic pre-padding applications, has been broadened.
• At last, the Cryovac U-BRT (Ultra Barrier Rigid Trays, 4) provides retailers with a new opportunity for increased performance at reduced costs.
Un centro d’esposizione permanente
Packforum è il nuovo centro d’esposizione permanente di Cryovac Europe, ospitato in un edificio di 1.900 m2 presso l’aeroporto Charles de Gaulle, a pochi chilometri da Parigi.
Aperto tutto l’anno, Packforum riunisce l’intera gamma dei sistemi, delle risorse e dei servizi Cryovac, ed è stato pensato per i manager dell’industria alimentare e della grande distribuzione. In questo centro, infatti, è possibile prendere visione dei sistemi Cryovac in funzione, e ottenere tutte le informazioni, l’assistenza e i servizi professionali necessari per prendere decisioni di importanza strategica, in termini di processi, tecnologia e marketing.

A permanent exhibition centre
Packforum is the new permanent exhibition centre of Cryovac Europe, located in a building covering 1,900 m2 at Charles de Gaulle airport, just outside Paris.
Demonstrating the entire range of Cryovac packaging systems and services year-round, this centre has been designed for decision-makers in the fresh food processing and retailing industries. In this centre they can in fact attend Cryovac product presentations and systems demonstrations, and obtain all the information, assistance and professional services needed to take decisions of great strategic importance governing processes, technology and marketing.
The centre also contains a real-life supermarket that displays many product samples on attractive shelves. Cryovac is also available for demonstrations with customer products and offers training sessions.
Imballo di prodotti palettizzati
A due anni dalla loro presentazione, le macchine avvolgitrici a film estensibile “Spinny” di Effe 3 Ti hanno riportato un largo consenso sul mercato.
Ora, l’azienda di Gattinara (VC) si presenta ad Ipack-Ima con un’integrazione della linea Spinny, caratterizzata da un look innovativo e semplicità d’impiego e manutenzione: si tratta di Rotax, un’avvolgitrice semiautomatica a braccio rotante ideale per elevate produzioni (fino a 35 pallet/h) e per le lavorazioni di prodotti instabili o particolarmente pesanti. Entrambe le macchine possono essere inserite in linee automatiche con trasporti a rulli o a catene, oppure integrate in sistemi di movimentazione già esistenti.
Oltre a Rotax, Effe 3 Ti propone una linea di reggiatura e nastratura automatica, che si contraddistingue per l’affidabilità e il buon rapporto qualità/prezzo.
Packaging of palletized products
Two years from their presentation, the “Spinny” stretchfilm wrapping machines by Effe 3 Ti have enjoyed a great success on the market.
Now the Gattinara-based concern (VC) will be present at Ipack-Ima with an integration of the Spinny series, featuring an innovatory look and simple use and maintenance: the new machine is called Rotax, a semiautomatic wrapping machine with rotating arm, ideal for high outputs (up to 35 pallets/h) and for working unstable or particularly heavy products. Both the machines can be inserted in automatic lines with roller or chain conveyors, or integrated into already existing handling systems.
As well as Rotax, Effe 3 Ti offers a strapping and automatic taping line, that stands out for reliability and a good quality/price ratio.
Carrello elevatore elettrico
R 60, il carrello elevatore elettrico a quattro ruote con portate da 1,6 a 4,99 t realizzato da Still (Lainate, MI), si contraddistingue per la trazione anteriore monomotore di nuova concezione che garantisce buone prestazioni in ogni situazione di marcia. Inoltre, i suoi freni a disco a bagno d'olio lavorano in assenza di rumore e contribuiscono a ridurre i costi di manutenzione.
Fra le altre caratteristiche, ricordiamo la maggiore autonomia di lavoro (anche un'ora in più) grazie all'elevata percentuale di recupero di energia (fino al 15%); la frenatura automatica; il display multifunzionale antiriflesso; la possibilità di scelta del programma di lavoro fra cinque livelli preimpostati; il comfort per il conducente, grazie all'abitacolo di guida alloggiato su supporti elastici di gomma; infine, i bassi costi di manutenzione.
Electrical forklift
R 60, the four-wheel electrical forklift with loadbearing from 1.6 to 4.99 t created by Still (Lainate, MI), stands out for its new concept single engine forward traction that guarantees good performance in all running situations. As well as that its oil-bathed disk brakes are noiseless and contribute to reducing maintenance costs.
Among the other features it runs longer (even up to an extra hour) thanks to the high energy recovering rate (up to 15% more); automatic braking; multifunction antireflection display; the possibility of choosing a work program among the five preset levels; driver comfort, thanks to the driving compartment being lodged on elastic rubber fittings; finally low maintenance costs.
Soluzioni per il pharma
La svizzera Hoffman Neopac AG ha lanciato un tubetto polyfoil ad alta barriera per soluzioni farmaceutiche, con diametro 10 mm, che - a detta dell’azienda - è il più piccolo al mondo realizzato con questa tecnologia (un accoppiato polietilene-alluminio, che dopo la saldatura longitudinale del corpo viene ricoperto per estrusione da un film di polietilene).
Questo tubetto, prodotto su una linea da 300 pezzi/min, è caratterizzato da: stabilità della forma, che consente la piena leggibilità del messaggio sulla confezione; saldatura invisibile, che permette di realizzare stampe su tutta la superficie; efficace effetto barriera, che assicura la protezione da ossidazione, agenti chimici, luce ed eventuali fuoriuscite di prodotto. Non va poi dimenticata l’igiene, garantita da una lavorazione svolta nel nuovo Pharmacenter all’interno di una camera bianca classe D. Fra le proposte dell’azienda elvetica ricordiamo anche i tubetti della linea Chamaleon Colors, dalle tonalità cangianti e brillanti e in numerosi varianti di colore, che conferiscono al tubetto un elevato valore estetico.
Neopac lavora nel rispetto degli standard GMP, dispone di linee produttive ad alta velocità e offre una gamma completa di tubetti con forme e chiusure diverse, in grado di soddisfare le esigenze espresse dal settore farmaceutico, cosmetico e dell’igiene dentale.
Solutions for pharma
The Swiss firm Hoffman Neopac AG has launched a polyfoil high barrier tube for pharmaceutical solutions, with diameter 10 mm that – in the company’s words – is the smallest in the world made with this technology (a polyethylene-aluminium laminate, that after longitudinal sealing of the body is extrusion covered with a polyethylene film).
This tube, produced on a 300 pc/min line, features: shape stability that enables full reading of message on the pack; an invisible seal, that enables the entire surface to be printed; effective barrier effect, that ensures protection form oxidization, chemical agents, light and any leak of product. Hygiene should not be forgotten, guaranteed by processing carried out in the new Pharmacenter inside a class D clean room.
Among the product offers of the Swiss group we also cite the tubes from the Chamaleon Colors line, with changing, shiny hues in numerous color variants, that give the tube great visuals.
Neopac works in conformity to GMP standards, has high speed production lines and offers a complete range of tubes with different shapes and closures, capable of satisfying the needs expressed by the pharma, chemical and dental hygiene sector.
Bottiglie: aggiornamenti sul PET
È stato un evento di rilievo quello messo in campo da Krones - in collaborazione con Husky, Plastic System e Pet Engineering - per fare il punto sugli ultimi sviluppi tecnologici e di prodotto sulle bottiglie di PET. Articolato su quattro giorni, dal 27 al 30 gennaio scorso, si è svolto all’Hotel Regina Adelaide di Riva del Garda (a Riva ha sede la filiale italiana del gruppo tedesco) ed è stato occasione per presentare con il dovuto rilievo la nuova soffiatrice Contiform S, drasticamente rivisitata nel concetto e nelle prestazioni.
L’interesse della manifestazione risiede nel livello delle soluzioni presentate e nel fatto che la bottiglia è stata considerata come “sistema”, ovvero come risultato di un ciclo di produzione coerente, tenendo conto di tutte le variabili critiche in gioco. Un ciclo complesso, illustrato grazie alle competenze specifiche delle aziende che hanno partecipato all’iniziativa.
Oltre a Krones, che ha illustrato la soffiatrice e ne ha mostrato la possibile integrazione con una riempitrice ed etichettatrice per bevande gassate (il cosiddetto sistema “Bloc”), sono infatti intervenuti esperti nel trattamento del granulo (core business di Plastic Systems sono i deumidificatori), nella realizzazione di stampi per preforme (specialità del colosso canadese Husky, che in Italia è presente con la filiale torinese), e progettazione della bottiglia nonché ingegnerizzazione del ciclo produttivo (Pet Engineering).

Bottles: PET update
Krones recently fielded a key event - in cooperation with Husky, Plastic System and Pet Engineering - to review the situation as to the latest technological and product developments regarding PET bottles. Held over four days, from 27-30th January last, the encounter took place at the Hotel Regina Adelaide, Riva del Garda (the town being the site of the German concern’s Italian branch) and was the occasion for presenting, with due emphasis, the new Contiform S blower, drastically revised in concept and performance.
The interest in the showing lies in the level of the solution presented and in the fact that the bottle has been considered as a “system” or that is as the result of a coherent production cycle, bearing in mind all the critical variables at play.
A complex cycle, illustrated thanks to the specific skills of the concerns that took part in the event.
As well as Krones, that illustrated the blower and showed its possible link-up with a filler and labeler for fizzy beverages (the socalled “Bloc” system), experts in the processing of granules (dehumidifiers are Plastic System’s core business), in the creation of preform moulds (speciality of the Canadian concern Husky, that is present in Italy with a branch at Turin), and design of the bottle as well as the engineering of the production cycling (Pet Engineering) in fact intervened. The following issue will contain an account of the most interesting contributions.
Chiarificante per il PP
Grazie all’agente chiarificante per polipropilene Millad 3988, realizzato da Milliken Chemical, la britannica Inblow Form (specialista nel blow-moulding) è riuscita a produrre un contenitore per detersivi chiaro e resistente, su richiesta di MPM Consumer Products. Millad 3988 infatti offre un’eccezionale trasparenza, senza conferire odori e sapori particolari al packaging. Per questi motivi ha incontrato ampi consensi tanto nel settore alimentare (nella produzione di contenitori a parete sottile e termoformati, e di bottiglie ISBM), quanto industriale, nel confezionamento di prodotti liquidi per la pulizia della casa. Il PP chiarificato è attualmente impiegato nello stampaggio ad iniezione, TWIM (Thin Wall Injection Moulding, o per contenitori a parete sottile), stampaggio per estrusione e soffiaggiostampaggio per iniezione e soffiaggio, stampaggio per iniezione e stiro-soffiaggio e termoformatura.
PP clarifying agent
Thanks to PP clarifying agent Millad 3988 by Milliken, the British concern Inblow Form (a blow moulding specialist) has developed a clear and affordable container for a new cleaning product, requested from MPM Consumer Products.
Millad 3988, in fact, is a state-of-the-art clarifying agent for PP. It offers unparalleled transparency, without adding special odours or taste to packaging. This explains its huge success in the food sector, where it's used for the production of thin-wall and thermoformed containers and ISBM bottles, as well as in industry, for packing liquid household detergents. Clarified PP is currently used in injection-moulding, TWIM (Thin Wall Injection Moulding), extrusion-blow-moulding, injection-blow-moulding, injection-stretch-blow-moulding and thermoforming.
PET bi-stadio nei contenitori per water coolers
Alkam ha messo a punto una soffiatrice specifica per contenitori di PET di grandi capacità (da 5 a 25 litri) decisamente innovativa; basato sulla tecnologia bi-stadio, il modello BM1 combina la precisione e la flessibilità di una motorizzazione elettrica con la semplicità d'uso e una facile manutenzione.
La grande diffusione dei distributori per acqua sta destando l'interesse delle aziende fornitrici di impianti e/o macchine per l'imbottigliamento e la produzione di contenitori. E se, sul mercato, prevale ancora il "boccione" multiuso da 5 galloni (18,9 l) realizzato in policarbonato con tecnologia mono-stadio, la ricerca si sta muovendo a grandi passi in altre direzioni, per rendere disponibili soluzioni più flessibili e competitive.
I nuovi sviluppi prevedono infatti la produzione di boccioni monouso di PET, che rispondono in pieno alle esigenze di igienicità, di una gestione logistica e distributiva più snella, di facilità di riciclo e, non ultimo, di forti economie di scala. I contenitori sono ottenuti dal soffiaggio di una preforma, hanno aspetto trasparente e brillante, sono riciclabili e consentono una decisa riduzione del peso e dell’impatto ambientale. Le preforme hanno caratteristiche tali da consentire la produzione di boccioni da 5 galloni, con peso variabile tra i 350 g a 750 g in funzione delle esigenze dell'utilizzatore. Tra i primi a realizzare un sistema preforma/boccione di PET mono-uso per i water-coolers, ricordiamo IMPET e PDC.
Anche in questo ambito, l'adozione della tecnologia bi-stadio è risultata competitiva rispetto al mono-stadio. Il sistema prevede infatti il soffiaggio delle preforme e l'invio dei boccioni ottenuti direttamente alle linee di imbottigliamento, limitando i rischi di potenziali contaminazioni e riducendo al contempo la necessità di ampi spazi per lo stoccaggio dei contenitori vuoti.
Una risposta tecnologica
Alkam (Cordignano, TV) ha ritenuto strategico investire in questo settore, e ha realizzato una soffiatrice specifica - il modello B1 (1) - per contenitori da 5 a 25 litri, con produttività da 400 a 250 pezzi/h rispettivamente, che va a integrare una gamma già ricca di sistemi bi-stadio.
Sulla base delle competenze acquisite nel settore dell'imbottigliamento, Alkam ha combinato la propria tecnologia dello stiro elettrico con una pressa di soffiaggio a conchiglia a movimento elettrico (2 e 3).
Particolare attenzione è stata rivolta alla fase di riscaldo delle preforme, il cui spessore (fino a 10 mm) ha imposto cambiamenti significativi nella metodologia adottata tradizionalmente. I forni sono disposti in modo che la preforma sia sottoposta a cicli di riscaldo, seguiti da quelli di condizionamento, fino ad arrivare alla corretta temperatura, mantenuta poi costante tramite una retroazione in anello chiuso. Inoltre, la ricerca Alkam ha puntato l'attenzione sulla determinazione della giusta quantità d'aria da introdurre nei forni, per trovare un equilibrio tra lo scambio di calore per irraggiamento e quello per convezione. Ogni paramentro funzionale della macchina viene tenuto facilmente sotto controllo dal touch screen con sistema di supervisione, che adotta un menù intuitivo e multilingue (4), mentre un modem interno ne permette la regolazione remota.
I vantaggi, in pratica
A differenza di quanto avviene per i contenitori di policarbonato che, realizzati da trasformatori esterni, sono soggetti a diverse operazioni di manipolazione e trasporto prima di essere riempiti, la BM1 consente dunque all'imbottigliatore di produrre i boccioni in linea con l'impianto d'imbottigliamento.
Il che permette di ottenere:
- maggiori garanzie igieniche;
- riduzione dell'area destinata allo stoccaggio dei boccioni vuoti;
- gestione della produzione dei boccioni più flessibile, allineata alle richieste della linea d'imbottigliamento;
- processo produttivo semplificato.
Si tratta di una soluzione vantaggiosa anche dal punto di vista economico, dato che:
- l'investimento iniziale per l'impianto di soffiaggio è più contenuto rispetto a quello necessario, ad esempio, per un impianto mono-stadio;
- l'output orario di boccioni risulta mediamente triplicato rispetto alla produzione effettuata con tecnologia mono-stadio; da qui deriva una sostanziale diminuzione del costo unitario;
- anche il peso unitario del boccione può essere ridotto (fino al 50%), in funzione delle esigenze dell'utilizzatore, il che consente ulteriori risparmi;
- con l'acquisto di preforme, l'imbottigliatore decuplica il numero di pezzi trasportati per carico, con evidenti economie nelle fasi di trasporto.
Double-stage PET in containers for water coolers
Alkam has designed an extremely innovative blowing machine specifically for large capacity PET containers (from 5 to 25 litres): based on double-stage technology, model BM1 combines the precision and flexibility of electric drive with ease of use and simple maintenance.
The widespread proliferation of water distributors is arousing the interest of companies supplying equipment and/or machines for bottling and the production of containers. Although the item most commonly found on the market is still the multi-use 5-gallon (18.9 l) "decanter" made in polycarbonate through single-stage technology, research is moving apace in other directions, to provide more flexible and competitive solutions.
These new developments foresee the production of disposable PET containers, which completely satisfy the need for cleanliness, more streamlined distribution and logistical handling, ease of recycling and, not least, excellent economies of scale. The containers, obtained by the blowing of a pre-mould, are shiny, transparent and recyclable, They also permit a substantial reduction in weight and impact on the environment.
The pre-moulds have features which allow the production of 5-gallon containers weighing between 350 g and 750 g depending on the user’s requirements. Among the first to produce a disposable PET pre-mould/container for water-coolers were IMPET and PDC.
In this field, the adoption of double-stage technology has proved competitive compared with single-stage. In fact, the system allows the blowing of the pre-mould and the despatch of the containers obtained straight to the bottling line, limiting the risk of possible contamination and at the same time reducing the need for large areas for the storage of empty containers.
A technological response
Alkam (Cordignano, TV) considered it a strategic move to invest in this sector, and has designed a blowing machine (the BM1 in figure 1) specifically for containers from 5 to 25 litres, achieving production speeds between 400 and 250 pieces per hour respectively, that is added to an already broad range of double-stage systems.
Based on knowhow obtained in the bottling sector, Alkam has combined its own electric stretch technology with an electrically-driven shell-type blowing mould
(2 and 3).
Particular attention as been paid to the heating stage of the pre-mould, whose thickness (up to 10 mm) has required significant changes to the methodology traditionally adopted.
The ovens are arranged so that the pre-mould is subjected to a heating cycle, followed by conditioning stages, before arriving at the correct temperature, which is then maintained by retroaction in a closed ring. Alkam’s research has also focussed on establishing the optimum quantity of air to be introduced into the ovens, to find a balance between radiant and convection heat exchange systems. Every functional parameter of the machine is easily controlled by touch screen with a supervision system which uses an intuitive, multilingual menu (4), while an internal modem allows remote control.
The advantages in practice
Unlike the situation with polycarbonate containers which, being made by external converters, are subject to different handling and transportation operations before being filled, the BM1 allows the bottling company to produce its own containers in the line. This results in:
- a greater guarantee of cleanliness;
- a reduction in the area required for storing empty containers;
- more flexible control over the production of the containers, in line with bottling requirements;
- simplified production process.
The equipment also has advantages from the point of view of economy, given that:
- the initial investment in equipment is lower than, for example, that for single-stage equipment;
- on average, the hourly output of containers is three times that produced by single-stage technology, this results in a considerable reduction in unit costs;
- the weight of each container can also be reduced (by up to 50%), depending on the user’s requirements, thus allowing further savings;
- by acquiring the pre-moulds, the bottling company increases tenfold the number of pieces transported per load, with obvious economies during the transportation stage.
Al servizio del catering
Attiva da più di cinquant’anni nella progettazione e produzione di contenitori di plastica ad uso industriale, Martini Alfredo (Turate, CO) lancia Food Division, una linea studiata per la ristorazione e il catering. Realizzati in materiale atossico e disponibili in diverse dimensioni, i contenitori Food Division sono sovrapponibili e dotati di maniglie laterali e di coperchio, anche nella versione a slitta con chiusura sigillabile.
La gamma completa comprende: cestelli per bicchieri dotati di pareti forate; Delta Mec 12, sistema completo di contenitori, vaschette e separatori mobili per posate di qualsiasi forma e dimensione; Delta Mec 21, 22 e 32 studiati per trasportare in modo ottimale i piatti; contenitori portacuscini; Omikron 70, contenitore di grande capacità inseribile/sovrapponibile, anche con ruote; Omikron 6, piccolo contenitore con coperchio sigillabile a garanzia dell’inviolabilità del contenuto, anche durante il trasporto; Delta Mec 50, conforme agli standard europei, è sovrapponibile con maniglie passanti o chiuse.
Le novità di Martini Alfredo non si esauriscono con Food Line: ricordiamo infatti che la gamma dei Cargopallet si è arricchita con un nuovo modello dotato di speciale portello ribaltabile, per una maggiore accessibilità; merita un cenno, infine, il bancale MY-P, strutturato per carichi particolarmente pesanti e utilizzabile su rack fino a 1 t.
Serving catering
Active for more than fifty years in the design and the production of plastic containers for industrial use, Martini Alfredo (Turate, CO) is launching Food Division, a line devised for the restaurant trade and catering. Created in non toxic material and available in different sizes, the Food Division containers are stackable and come with side handles and lid, also in the sledge version with sealable closure. The complete range includes: baskets for glasses with holed walls; Delta Mec 12, complete system of mobile containers, trays and separators for cutlery of any shape and size; Delta Mec 21, 22 and 32 devised for optimum transport of plates; pillow containers; Omikron 70, insertable/stackable large capacity container, also with wheels; Omikron 6, small containers with sealable top guaranteeing antitampering of contents, even during transport; Delta Mec 50, conforming to European standards, stackable with open or closed handles.
The new features from Martini Alfredo do not stop with the Food Line: we in fact cite the range of Cargopallets that has had a new model added to it fitted with a special upturnable hatch, for greater accessibility; worthy of mention lastly the MY-P pallet, structured for especially heavy loads and usable on racks up to 1 t.
Transfer lineare
LTE di Montech Italia (Como) è un sistema transfer-longitudinale asincrono per trasportare automaticamente i pallet attraverso le postazioni di lavoro. I bancali da manovrare sono fissati a portapezzi standardizzati (80x80, 115x115 e 160x160) realizzati con plastica ad alta resistenza e movimentati da trasportatori Montech. La modularità di LTE consente all’utilizzatore di introdurre gradualmente i processi di automazione, mentre gli eventuali adattamenti dell'impianto sono possibili anche in un secondo tempo con poche operazioni. Costituito da pochi componenti, è semplice da montare e non sono necessari forature o fissaggi particolari. Infine, vanta una precisione di posizionamento di ± 0,05 mm.
Linear transfers
LTE by Montech italia (Como) is an asynchronous longitudinal transfer system for the automatic transfer of pallets through workstations. The pallets to be moved are fixed to standardized piece carriers (80x80, 115x115 e 160x160), created with high resistance plastic and moved on Montech conveyors. The LTE’s modularity enables the user to gradually introduce the automation processes, while after that the system can be adapted with just a few operations. LTE is made up of few components, the assembly being simple and does not require special holing or fixing. Finally, the device proposed by Montech Italia can boast a precision positioning of ± 0,05 mm.
