Cilindri d'oro
La miglior tecnologia per la stampa rotocalco al centro del Golden Cylinder Awards dell'associazione statunitense GAA. Che assegna il "premio dei premi" alla coppia Reclamebureau Van Heertum-Gestel Printing Company, e conferma l'eccellenza delle macchine Made in Italy. L.G.
La GAA (American Association for Gravure Printing Process) premia ogni anno le migliori realizzazioni nell'ambito della stampa rotocalco - siano esse pubblicazioni o imballaggi - con i Cilindri d'Oro. Al centro della competizione, i risultati ottenuti dai concorrenti combinando tecniche ed effetti, capaci di esaltare le possibilità offerte dalla rotocalco.
A fronte di 125 entry da tutto il mondo, quest'anno il premio per la categoria "Prodotti” è stato assegnato al produttore olandese di imballaggi per tabacco Gestel, per la perfezione della brochure corporate studiata da Van Heertum (responsabile del design, della pre-stampa e dello sviluppo di prodotto).
La brochure in questione rappresenta la summa delle abilità espresse da Gestel in fatto di imballaggi, di cui vengono riprodotte forme, colori ed effetti speciali.
Ma non basta. Per la acategoria "pubblicazioni" è stata premiata un’altra realizzazione firmata Gestel/Van Heertum; si tratta della copertina della rivista specializzata Tobacco Journal International - stampata in roto a 5 colori, con alimentazione a fogli - dove spicca l'impiego dei pigmenti Iriodin.
In entrambi i casi, Iggesund ha fornito la carta, Sicpa-Aarberg ha formulato gli inchiostri, mentre le macchine da stampa sono della H.C. Moog e le incisioni Lasertechnik Druck-Service Goerz.
Le due realizzazioni sono state inoltre insignite di quella sorta di "super riconoscimento" denominato Best of the Best.
Gli altri Cilindri d'oro sono stati assegnati a:
• RJR Packaging per la realizzazione e la stampa del nuovo imballaggio Camel Turkish Jade, dove l'alta definizione del colore ha sostenuto il riposizionamento del marchio (da menzionare l'impiego di macchine Rotomec e i substrati di cartone della Westvaco);
• Gilded Elegance, premiato per l’adozione della stampa in quadricromia e l'uso innovativo di inchiostri a base acqua per le proprie carte da regalo, disegnate e stampate da Plus Mark con una macchina Cerutti.
• Nabisco per la confezione di biscotti ET Chips Ahoy, stampata su carta metallizzata in sostituzione del più costoso sistema precedente (carta Vacumet, macchina Schiavi, inchiostri Sun Chemical).
• Nove colori, due stampe in volta e un adesivo per ottenere gli effetti vincenti della confezione per il caffè hawaiano Maui Kaanapali (design, pre stampa e stampa RJR Packaging, macchina Rotomec).
• Stesso staff vincente della confezione precedente (RJR e Rotomec) ma su cartone metallizzato Westvaco, per i packaging raffinati e complessi delle sigarette Winston S2.
• Il gioco promozionale è direttamente incorporato nel film della Exxon Mobil, stampato da Seville Flexpack su Schiavi con inchiostri Sun Chemical. È quanto ha decretato il successo delle confezioni Sunmaid Raisins Toons & Treats Promo, progettate da McClean e preparate da S&M.
• Per la categoria “substrati non porosi” vice la divisione Security Print della Avery Dennison con la serie di francobolli dedicati alle piante carnivore. Frutto di una stretta collaborazione fra i vari fornitori, hanno richiesto la messa a punto di procedimenti ad hoc di stampa, fustellatura e finitura.
• Packaging Corporation of America ha stampato su Cerutti con inchiostri Sun Chemical il packaging vincente dei propri soffiatori da giardino. La stampa è stata adattata per ottenere il migliore risultato estetico su supporti porosi di spessore ridotto.
• Macchine Andreotti e inchiostri Sun Chemical fra gli ingredienti della stampa vincente dei francobolli realizzati da United States Postal Service.
• Premio alla semplificazione (ed economicità) di processo a Quebecor World e Mt. Morris, per gli album di figurine per la scuola a marchio Carnival.
• L’eccellenza del registro colore e della qualità finale di stampa ha decretato la vittoria di BrownCor Int. (stampato R.R. Donnelley Company) nella sezione Supercalendered. Prestampa Banta Digital, macchine Cerutti, Motter e Gross, carta Madison, inchiostri Sun Chemical & Siegwerk.
• È ancora Quebecor World lo stampatore delle due pubblicazioni che hanno vinto il premio nelle categorie Lightweight Coated/Under 40# e Coated/Over 40# (rispettivamente Crate & Barrel Holiday Lite 2001 e il National Geografic del febbraio 2001).
• Il riconoscimento all’innovazione tecnica è stato assegnato a UPM Kymmene, che ha messo a punto un sistema di movimentazione delle bobine madri in grado di sfruttare al meglio i mezzi e le attrezzature di trasporto e razionalizzare gli spazi.
• Cilindro alla Image Preparation per AABACH Usa: impiegando un formato TIFF, i dati in prestampa sono direttamente inviati all’incisione.
• la sezione Cylinder Manufacturing la DisCoP Technology (Chema e RJR Packaging), per la drastica riduzione dei tempi di lavorazione e l’aumento della qualità.
• Premio agli inchiostri e ai substrati per Packaging Corporation of America, che ha sfruttato al meglio i materiali PCA Luxcote, gli inchiostri Sun Chemical e la perfezione delle macchine Cerutti.
• È la Schiavi (gruppo Bobst) a conquistare il prestigioso premio all’innovazione nella stampa, con la rotativa SG-2000.
La giuria ha apprezzato la possibilità di gestire con efficienza sulla stessa macchina sia ordini corti che lunghi. SG 2000 è infatti equipaggiata con un sistema di lavaggio in macchina del sistema di inchiostrazione ed è dedicata all’uso di maniche per i pressori e i cilindri rotocalco.
Inoltre è predisposta per l’uso di cilindri monolitici, con cambio automatico e simultaneo su tutti gli elementi (cambio lavoro completo in 15 minuti). Apprezzati anche il gruppo racla motorizzato e l’incapsulatura del sistema di inchiostrazione.
• Packaging Corporation of America vince anche il premio Post Press, con l’incisione e la stampa diretta su cartoncino (su Cerutti) della confezione di concime Miracle.Gro (The Scotts Company).
• Infine, la nuova categoria di concorso: vince il cilindro alla Published Research l’analizzatore automatico di residui solvente Neptune 801 prodotto dalla Nira.
Golden cylinders
The best technology for rotogravure printing at the centre of the Golden Cylinder Awards from the US association GAA. Giving the "Best of Best" award to the pair Reclamebureau Van Heertum-Gestel Printing Company, and confirming the excellence of machines Made in Italy. L.G.
Each year, the GAA (Gravure Association of America) awards the best creations in the field of rotogravure printing - whether publications or packaging - with their Golden Cylinders. At the centre of the competition are the results the contestants have obtained by combining techniques and effects, capable of highlighting the possibilities offered by the gravure printing process.
With some 125 entries from around the world, the award for the "Products" category this year goes to the Dutch producer of tobacco packaging, Gestel, for its perfection of the corporate brochure designed by Van Heertum (in charge of design, pre-printing and product development). The brochure represents the sum of Gestel's skill and expertise in packaging, with reproduction of shapes, colors and special effects. But that's not all. Another product by Gestel/Van Heertum also won the "Publications" category: the cover of the trade magazine Tobacco Journal International - gravure printed in 5 colors with sheet feeding - where the use of Iriodin pigments is a special feature. In both cases, Iggesund has supplied the paper and Sicpa-Aarberg has formulated the inks, while the printing machines are by H.C. Moog and the engraving by Lasertechnik Druck-Service Goerz. The two products have also received that sort of "super recognition" called Best of the Best.
The other Golden Cylinders
• RJR Packaging for the creation and printing of the new Camel Turkish Jade packaging, where the high definition of the color has supported the repositioning of this brand (special mention goes to the use of Rotomec machines and cardboard substrata from Westvaco);
• Gilded Elegance, awarded for the adoption of a process printing and the innovative use of water based inks for its gift wrap, designed and printed by Plus Mark on a Cerutti machine.
• Nabisco for its ET Chips Ahoy pack, printed on metallized paper replacing the more costly system previously used (Vacumet paper, Schiavi machine, Sun Chemical inks).
• Nine colors, two backprints and an adhesive to get some special effects for the Hawaiian Maui Kaanapali coffee pack (design, pre-printing and printing by RJR Packaging, machine by Rotomec).
• The same winning staff as before (RJR and Rotomec), but this time for a Westvaco metallized board, for complex, elegant packaging for Winston S2 cigarettes.
• The game piece is directly incorporated in the Exxon Mobil film, printed by Seville Flexpack on Schiavi with Sun Chemical inks. This is the secret behind the success of the Sunmaid Raisins Toons & Treats Promo packs, designed by McClean and prepared by S&M.
• The winner of the “non porous substrata” category was the Security Print Division of Avery Dennison with its series of stamps dedicated to carnivorous plants. The result of close cooperation between the various suppliers, these stamps called for the development of ad hoc printing, die-cutting and finishing processes.
• Packaging Corporation of America has printed the award-winning packaging for its garden blowers on Cerutti with Sun Chemical inks. The print has been adapted to get the best aesthetic result on reduced thickness porous mediums.
• Andreotti machines and Sun Chemical inks are some of the ingredients of the award-winning printing of stamps by the United States Postal Service.
• An award for process simplification (and low-cost solutions) goes to Quebecor World and Mt. Morris for their Carnival figurine albums for schools.
• The excellence of the color register and the final print quality are the reasons for the BrownCor Int. (printed by the R.R. Donnelley Company) winning the Supercalendered section. Banta Digital pre-printing, Cerutti, Motter and Gross machines, Madison paper and Sun Chemical & Siegwerk inks.
• And again, Quebecor World, the printer of the two publications that won the Lightweight Coated/Under 40# and Coated/Over 40# categories (Crate & Barrel Holiday Lite 2001 and National Geographic February 2001 issue).
• Recognition for technical innovation went to UPM Kymmene, having developed a system for handling jumbo print rolls capable of rationalizing spaces and exploiting transport means and equipment to the full.
• A Cylinder for Image Preparation went to AABACH USA: using a TIFF format, the pre-printing data are sent directly to the engraving station.
• The Cylinder Manufacturing category was won by DisCoP Technology (Chema and RJR Packaging) for its dramatic cut in processing times and increased quality.
• An award for the Packaging Corporation of America for its inks and substrata, having managed to fully exploit the PCA Luxcote materials, Sun Chemical inks and perfect Cerutti machines.
• Schiavi (Bobst Group) won the prestigious award for innovation in printing with its rotogravure press model SG-2000. The jury particularly appreciated its suitability for long- and short-run productions.
In fact, the SG 2000 has an integrated on-press automatic washup system for the entire inking group and can use both sleeves and traditional cylinders (with automatic, simultaneous changeover of all elements in 15 minutes). Also much appreciated were the fully motorized doctor blade that is automatically set (blade angle) and the enclosed inking group so that there are no ink shashes.
• The Packaging Corporation of America also won the Post Press award with engraving and printing direct on board (Cerutti) of the Miracle.Gro fertiliser pack (The Scotts Company).
• Finally, the new category in this competition: the Golden Cylinder for Published Research was won by the Neptune 801 automatic analyser for solvent residue produced by Nira.
Azionamento con PLC integrato
ABB Industria, principale produttore di azionamenti in c.a. a bassa potenza, ha di recente presentato un nuovo azionamento, che ha tutte le carte in regola per stupire il mercato. Si chiama ACS 800 e, oltre ad essere semplice da avviare e programmare, vanta moltissime funzioni che lo rendono indicato per una vasta gamma di applicazioni.
Ingombro ridotto del 50% rispetto al precedente modello ACS 600, tecnologia DTC (Direct Torque Control) - in grado di offrire una risposta rapida alle variazioni del carico motore e assicurare un funzionamento più costante - filtri EMC e induttanze integrati all’interno dell’azionamento, ma sono anche disponibili moduli plug-in per estendere ulteriormente le potenzialità del sistema: queste sono alcune delle caratteristiche che rendono estremamente competitivo il nuovo ACS 800, che inizialmente sarà fornito con potenze nominali comprese tra 1,1 kW e 500 kW e con tensioni di alimentazione da 380 V a 500 V.
Avvio interattivo
Una delle funzioni che caratterizzano il nuovo azionamento è lo Start-up Assistant, un tool in dotazione standard che assicura la massima rapidità e semplicità di messa in servizio. L’utente viene infatti guidato nella selezione delle principali impostazioni dell’applicazione e, nel caso di un primo avvio, l'azionamento offre funzioni di messa in servizio guidate. Le istruzioni sono disponibili in 12 lingue, attraverso il pannello di comando del convertitore. Per facilitare l’installazione con un maggiore apporto di indicazioni è anche a disposizione un sistema di informazioni online per ciascuna fase, che presenta suggerimenti utili.
Ma ciò che distingue la nuova serie ACS 800 è anche la sua flessibilità. Infatti, le funzioni di Programmazione adattiva consentono di ampliare ulteriormente la vasta gamma di selezioni parametriche e di I/O liberamente programmabili. La Programmazione adattiva consiste in una serie di blocchi programmabili, utili a svolgere qualsiasi operazione nell’ambito di un gruppo di funzioni predefinito e a semplificare la programmazione dettagliata. Sono disponibili tutte le funzioni logico-matematiche comuni e dispositivi quali interruttori, comparatori, filtri e timer. L’utente può creare nuovi segnali di ingresso e/o di uscita modificando il controllo di velocità o di coppia dell’azionamento il quale, utilizzando un vero e proprio PLC integrato al suo interno, è in grado di adattarsi alle applicazioni più complesse. L'ACS 800 può integrare funzioni specificate dall’utente, normalmente svolte con l’aggiunta di dispositivi supplementari come relè e timer.
Alla luce di queste prestazioni, sono comprensibili le ragioni che, lo scorso maggio, hanno portato Alessio Andreoni, direttore settore azionamenti - Elettronica di potenza di ABB Industria a presentare l'ACS 800 come una novità assoluta, sostenendo che «un azionamento così non si era mai visto prima, perché dentro c'è tutto quello che conta!».
Drive with integrated PLC
ABB Industria, the leading producer of low power AC drives, has recently presented a new drive that's bound to amaze the market. Called the ACS 800, it boasts a multitude of functions that make it ideal for a wide range of applications as well as being simple to start and program. With overall dimensions half those of the previous ACS 600 model, DTC technology (Direct Torque Control) - capable of offering a fast response to changes in the motor load and guarantee more constant functioning - EMC filters and incorporated inductance, plus a choice of plug-in modules to further extend the potential of the system: these are just some of the characteristics that make the new ACS 800 supremely competitive.
To start with, the ACS 800 will be supplied with nominal power ranging from 1.1 kW and 500 kW and supply voltage from 380 V to 500 V.
Interactive start-up
One of the functions that characterise the new drive is the Start-up Assistant, a tool fitted as standard that guarantees max rapidity and ease in starting the drive. In fact, the user is guided in his choice of the main settings for the application and, if the very first start-up, the drive offers guided commissioning functions. The instructions come in 12 languages via the converter control panel. To make installation that much easier, with more indications, there's also an online information system for each phase offering useful tips. But what really distinguishes the new ACS 800 series is its flexibility. In fact, the Adaptive Programming functions let one extend the wide range of freely programmable parameter and I/O settings. Adaptive Programming consists of a series of programmable blocks, used to carry out any operation within a group of preset functions and to simplify detailed programming. All commonly used logical/mathematical functions are available, as are devices such as switches, comparators, filters and timers. The user can create new input and/or output signals by modifying the speed control or torque control of the drive, which can adapt itself to more complex applications with the aid of a proper PLC. The ACS 800 can incorporate functions specified by the user, normally carried out by additional devices such as relays and timers.
In view of the higher performance, one can easily understand the reasons why Alessio Andreoni, Director of the Drives - Power Electronics division of ABB Industria decided to present the ACS 800 last May as a complete novelty, claiming that “such a drive has never been seen before, because it's got everything that counts inside!”.

A complete and versatile inverter
The new EF1 µ Drive by Berges Electronic – featuring compact size and high performance in terms of torque and functionality – is the result of ten years of research on “Chip and wire” technology.
The new inverter, complete and versatile, is fitted with an EMC filter and integrated braking module, display and programming keyboard, MODBUS® and RS 485.
Two analogical inputs and outputs, six digital inputs and two programmable relay output make the ’EF1 µ Drive a converter easily adaptable to any application. As well as that the broad range of power tensions (115 Vac monophase, 200-230 Vac mono- and triple phase, 380-460 Vac triple phase) make it suited to all the markets in the power range from 0.37 to 4 KW.

Plant2Business rapidly distributes, wherever necessary, vast quantities of data to every part of the company and can be connected extremely simply to several control and database systems. Plant2Business considerably simplifies the programming interface, so that anyone (including non-expert users) can issue or transfer filed data between the different systems with a few clicks of the mouse, easily interfacing with various control systems and large-scale company databases. Le profonde innovazioni occorse negli ultimi anni nella tecnologia della stampa flessografica hanno rapidamente "invecchiato" non solo la componentistica ma anche i modelli di gestione, imponendo una riorganizzazione delle strutture produttive e, contestualmente, la radicale modifica delle procedure operative e dell'approccio alla macchina.
Considerando le inevitabili difficoltà che ne derivano, e mirando a obiettivi di economia e razionalizzazione, Schiavi ha progettato un nuovo modello di rotativa gearless a marchio Sigma, con l'intento di ottenere i massimi risultati di qualità senza stravolgere il modus operandi dello stampatore.
Così, durante l'open house organizzata lo scorso maggio per presentare la macchina in funzione, è stato sottolineato come il peculiare equilibrio fra meccanica ed elettronica ne permetta lo sfruttamento ottimale sia in linee tradizionali che in contesti hi-tech (flessibilità favorita dalla compattezza, dalla configurazione modulare, che agevola anche l’utilizzo degli accessori, oltre che dalla facilità di gestione che richiede un solo operatore). Ecco, in estrema sintesi, le sue caratteristiche salienti, risultato di un lavoro di progettazione che ha seguito tre grandi linee guida: semplicità nelle impostazioni dei parametri di funzionamento e cambio lavoro, ripetibilità delle condizioni di funzionamento e sicurezza per l'operatore.
Le caratteristiche principali
• Il gruppo stampa assicura il massimo smorzamento delle vibrazioni nelle condizioni più critiche (alta velocità, soggetti con superficie non costante).
• Il sistema di bloccaggio dei mandrini - sia cpc sia anilox -agevola il cambio maniche; nel gruppo racla le lame e le tenute laterali possono essere sostituite in macchina rapidamente e senza utensili.
• Ampia libertà di scelta del sistema di riscaldamento, con ricircolo dell'aria in condotti separati per un'essiccazione ottimale con minimi consumi e ridotta ritenzione di solvente.
• Il gruppo di raffreddamento del nastro, costituito da una coppia di calandre motorizzate, permette di mantenere la tensione corretta fino all'avvolgimento.
• Le stazioni di svolgimento e avvolgimento, con configurazione speculare, assicurano il controllo della tensione del nastro, minimizzando gli scarti anche durante le fasi più critiche di taglio/incolla (realizzato fino a 300 m/min con possibilità di sincronizzare le operazioni sulle due stazioni).
• Un sistema automatico effettua il prelavaggio con solvente impuro e quindi il lavaggio vero e proprio con solvente pulito. Il trattamento avviene con velocità e modalità differenziate a seconda del tipo di inchiostro da eliminare e della velocità dei componenti da pulire (nella situazione più critica si sono ottenuti risultati eccellenti impiegando circa 15 minuti e 11-13 litri di solvente per gruppo stampa). I fluidi vengono poi recuperati, trattati e smaltiti.
• Optional: preregistro automatico; ispezione nastro con individuazione automatica e segnalazione dei difetti di stampa.
• Dati tecnici principali: luce nastro 1120-1250 mm; luce stampa 1070-1200 mm; sviluppo stampa fra 330 mm (inferiore su richiesta) e 760 mm; velocità meccanica 300 m/min; diametro bobine 800-1000 mm.
For easier flexography
Schiavi has opened the doors of its new TTC demonstration centre to present its latest Sigma brand gearless flexographic printer, designed with the aim of making quality flexographic printing simpler and economically more rational. E.P.
The radical innovations which have taken place in the technology of flexographic printing in recent years have caused rapid “ageing” not only in the components market but also in management models, forcing a reorganisation of production structures and, at the same time, the fundamental modification of operating procedures and the approach to machinery. Taking into consideration the inevitable difficulties springing from this, and targeting objectives of economy and rationalisation, Schiavi has designed a new model of its Sigma brand with gearless press, with the aim of obtaining optimal results in terms of quality without compromising the modus operandi of the printer.
For this reason, during the “open house” organised last May to present the functioning machine, it was emphasised how the special balance between mechanics and electronics allowed optimum exploitation both in traditional lines and in the high-tech context (flexibility encouraged by compactness and the modular configuration, which also makes the use of accessories easier, as well as ease of management, requiring only one operator). These, very briefly, are the most important features, the result of design work which has followed three main guidelines: simplicity in the formulation of the parameters for functioning and changeover, repeatability of the conditions of functioning and safety for the operator.
The main features
• The printing group ensures maximum dampening of vibration in the most critical conditions (high speed, objects with irregular surfaces).
• The mandrel locking system – both cpc and anilox – makes it easier to change the sleeves; in the doctor blade group, the blades and mountings can be changed quickly without tools.
• Wide choice of heating systems, with re-circulation of air in separate conduits for optimum drying with minimum consumption and reduced solvent retention.
• The web cooling system, made up of a pair of motorised calenders, allows the correct tension to be maintained right up to rewinding.
• The unwinding and rewinding stations, with mirror-image configuration, ensure control of web tension, minimising the quantity of rejects even during the most critical stages of cutting/gluing (up to 300 m/min with the possibility of synchronising the operations of the two stations).
• An automatic system carries out pre-washing with impure solvent, so that the actual washing takes place with clean solvent.
This treatment takes place with different speeds and modes depending on the type of ink to be eliminated and the speed of the components to be cleaned (excellent results are achieved in the most critical situation, taking about 15 minutes and requiring 11-13 litres of solvent for each printing group).
The liquids are then recovered, treated and disposed of.
• Optional extras: automatic register pre-setting system; web inspection with automatic identification and signalling of printing defects.
• Main technical specifications: belt width 1120-1250 mm; print width 1070-1200 mm; print development between 330 mm (smaller on request) and 760 mm; mechanical speed 300 m/min; reel diameter 800-1000 mm.
Un print&apply personalizzabile
Particolarmente apprezzata per la sua versatilità e la facilità di adattamento in funzione delle diverse esigenze, la nuova print apply ALX 924 di Avery Dennison stampa e applica, con modalità uno ad uno, le etichette su qualsiasi imballo, garantendo così una maggiore personalizzazione delle linee produttive e di conseguenza un notevole abbattimento dei costi.
Avery Dennison - che non ha mancato l’importante appuntamento di Interpack presentandosi con le macchine per la stampa e applicazione di etichette della divisione Machinery e i prodotti della divisione Fastener – ha allestito lo stand in stile Identity Sticks, ovvero seguendo la nuova filosofia internazionale del marchio che si identifica con lo slogan “Un’identità per distinguersi”. Ed è proprio in questo ambito che l’etichetta assume una rilevante importanza nel dare un’identità ben definita al prodotto. In fiera è stata presentata anche la nuovissima stampante TTX 674, una macchina economica ad alte performance, dotata di testina near edge e dell’utile opzione “risparmio foil”.
Customizable print&apply
Particularly appreciated for its versatility and the ease with which it can be adapted to different needs, the new Avery Dennison ALX 924 prints and applies labels one by one on any type of packaging, thus guaranteeing a greater customisation of the production lines and consequently a considerable reduction in costs.
Avery Dennison attended Interpack with the label print&apply series of its Machinery Division and the products of its Fastener division in a stand in line with the new international philosophy of the brand that identifies with the slogan “Identity Sticks”. And it is right here that the label takes on a considerable importance in giving a well-defined identity to the product. The new TTX 674 printer, an economic, high performance machine, with near edge head and the useful “foil-saver” optional, was also presented at the fair.
Vasetti per yogurt
Nel 1956, quando Theca realizzò il primo vasetto di polistirolo termoformato per confezionare yogurt e panna, nulla lasciava presagire che un'iniziativa nata in seguito ad una richiesta di una piccola latteria dell'Alto Adige avrebbe rappresentato una vera e propria rivoluzione nel settore specifico. In Italia, nei primi anni Cinquanta, lo yogurt veniva infatti proposto in vasetti di vetro, venduto in gran parte nelle farmacie.
Confezionare lo yogurt e la panna in vasetti di polistirolo termoformato (che già allora Theca produceva in linea con l'estrusione, una tecnologia divenuta comune vent'anni dopo) ha determinato l'automatizzazione dei sistemi di riempimento, e il continuo fiorire d'iniziative industriali e commerciali.
L'azienda di Turate (CO) è oggi tra i leader europei nella produzione di vasetti termoformati, per yogurt e prodotti similari, nonché per altri settori alimentari e la detergenza, e offre un’ampia gamma di modelli, con diametri ed altezze diverse, da 50-80 cc. fino a 6 l di capacità, proponendo contenitori con stampe di alta qualità.
Pots for yoghurt
Way back in 1956, when Theca created the first heat-moulded polystyrene pot for packing yoghurt and cream, no-one could have predicted that a request from a small dairy in the Alto Adige would result in a real revolution in the sector. In Italy in the early 1950s, yoghurt was sold in small glass jars, for the most part sold in chemists’.
Packaging yoghurt and cream in heatformed polystyrene tubs (that already then Theca produced in line by extrusion, a technology that became common twenty years afterwards) led to the automization of the filling systems, and the continuous flourishing of industrial and commercial undertakings. Today, the company from Turate (CO) is among the leading European companies in the production of heat-moulded pots for yoghurt and similar products, as well as for other sectors of the foodstuffs and detergent markets, with a wide range of models with various diameters and heights, from 50-80 cc. up to 6 litres capacity. The containers boast high quality printing.
Rulli conici per curve
Rulli Rulmeca di Almè (BG), presenta la nuova serie KRM/S3, rulli conici appositamente progettati per realizzare curve comandate nel trasporto di pallet e carichi pesanti in genere. Questi rulli, completamente in acciaio con mantello zincato, grazie all’ottima esecuzione assicurano un avanzamento regolare dei colli. L’asse è in esecuzione standard con fori filettati per il fissaggio con viti che, tra l’altro consente un facile montaggio e l’irrigidimento della struttura.
A catalogo sono disponibili in diametro massimo tubo 102 e lunghezza rullo 1050, 1150 e 1250 mm.
Grazie al nuovo centro di produzione, con programmazione elettronica, Rulli Rulmeca è in grado di produrre rulli con conicità per raggi di curvatura diversi dallo standard.
Tapered rollers for curves
Rulli Rulmeca of Almè (BG), is presenting its new KRM/S3 tapered rollers especially designed for creating commanded curves for transporting pallets and heavy loads in general. These rollers, completely in steel with zinc coating, thanks to their excellence ensure a regular feed of items. The axis is in standard execution with threaded holes for fixing the screws that, among other things enable easy assembly and a stabler structure.
The KRM/S3 can be ordered with a max tube diameter of 102 mm and length of roller of 1050, 1150 and 1250.
Thanks to their new production centre with electronic programming, Rulli Rulmeca is capable of producing tapered rollers for non-standard curvature radii.
Una caraffa per bottiglia
ADS ed Evian/Danone, dopo un anno di ricerca e sviluppo, sono riusciti a ottenere una innovativa bottiglia da 2 l di PET. “La Carafe” è nata grazie alla messa a punto di un’apposita macchina di soffiaggio per bottiglie di PET (realizzata da ADS), nonché allo studio accurato del design della preforma da utilizzare. Testata e modificata da ADS ed Evian, oggi la preforma viene prodotta dalla società SGT.
Realizzare La Carafe non è stato facile: la forma asimmetrica, lo spessore ridotto, nonostante le grosse dimensioni, e le parti spigolose hanno richiesto infatti un’estrema precisione nella soffiatura, ma il produttore Sources du Mont-Dore (gruppo Evian) ha voluto proporre una bottiglia di grosso impatto: contrariamente alle altre, che poggiano sulla base, La Carafe si presenta appoggiata su un fianco, con il collo decentrato, e dotata di una maniglia che facilita la presa e il versamento dell’acqua.
A carafe as bottle
After a year of research and development, ADS and Evian/Danone have managed to come up with an innovative 2 litre PET bottle. “La Carafe” has been created thanks to the development of specially-designed blowing machine for PET bottles (designed by ADS), and careful study of the design of the pre-former to be used. Tested and modified by ADS and Evian, the pre-former is now produced by SGT. It was certainly no easy matter to create La Carafe: the asymmetric shape, the reduced thickness, not to mention the large size and the acute corners, required extreme precision in the blowing process but the producer Sources du Mont-Dore (Evian group) wanted to put out a bottle with great impact: unlike others, which rest on their bases, La Carafe lies on its side, with the neck off-centre, and is fitted with handle which aids picking up and pouring out the water.
Chi ha paura della sleeve
Promuovere e diffondere il sistema sleeve sui mercati internazionali: questo l’obiettivo che da anni persegue Rotoincisa Integrazioni con impegno e entusiasmo. Molto è stato fatto e numerosi sono gli accordi di collaborazione operativi nel mondo, eppure ancora tanto resta da fare… S.L.
“C’erano una volta i vecchi cilindri per la stampa, che col passare del tempo avevano finito per rendere “pesante” e meno competitiva anche la più bella e sofisticata macchina rotocalco … Poi qualcuno inventò le matrici leggere e il mondo dell’imballaggio flessibile si aprì a nuove prospettive e a un futuro di sviluppo e prosperità”. Questa, esagerando, potrebbe essere la storia delle sleeve per rotocalco e, non penso di sbagliare, di una delle aziende che maggiormente hanno contribuito all’affermazione nel mondo di questo sistema: la Rotoincisa di Rho (MI).
A distanza di più di dieci anni dai primi incerti tentativi, accolti con scetticismo dagli addetti ai lavori, l’impiego di matrici leggere per la stampa rotocalco si è affermato un po’ ovunque in ragione degli evidenti vantaggi in termini qualitativi, logistici e, più in generale, economici. Ormai sono disponibili sul mercato diversi sistemi, con peculiarità assai diverse, ma sembrerebbe che quello messo a punto, con felice intuizione, dalla Rotoincisa, che per altro vanta una lunga tradizione nel campo dell’incisione, sia in grado di coniugare il massimo della flessibilità e dell’affidabilità, con il minimo impiego di materiale. I continui sviluppi hanno infatti portato ad un’articolazione ed evoluzione del prodotto/supporto che, realizzato inizialmente in nichel con rivestimento di rame, ora è disponibile anche solo in rame in versione depellicolabile o usa e getta.
L'unione fa la forza
Il metodo Rotoincisa, però, non si caratterizza solo per le peculiarità dell’insieme sleeve e cilindri madre (cilindri aria di supporto), ma per lo specifico approccio al mercato.
L’azienda, infatti, attraverso Rotoincisa Integrazioni, realtà creata ad hoc con lo scopo di promuovere la diffusione del sistema, non solo è in grado di fornire le maniche leggere incise, pronte per l’uso, ma anche i soli supporti in rame e il know how necessario affinché altri, stampatori o incisori,possano provvedere a realizzare in proprio la matrice di stampa.
Si tratta indubbiamente di una scelta che apre in direzione di un’ulteriore sviluppo del sistema permettendo, in primis, di risolvere il problema, sentito da molti utilizzatori, di non dover dipendere da un unico fornitore.
In questo modo, Rotoincisa Integrazioni è riuscita ad aggregare un gruppo di “concorrenti partner” che costituiscono una catena di fornitura adeguata alle esigenze produttive di importanti stampatori ed end user, che sono passati alle sleeve.
Il sistema sleeve si conferma così come una delle opzioni più interessanti per il mondo rotocalco e lo dimostra il numero sempre crescente di utilizzatori nel mondo e il fatto che gli stessi costruttori di macchine da stampa, in alcuni casi, abbiano già realizzato nuovi modelli in grado di ottimizzare l’utilizzo delle matrici leggere, consentendone il montaggio e lo smontaggio in macchina.
Who's afraid of the sleeve
To promote and spread the sleeve system on international markets: this has been Rotoincisa Integrazioni's goal for many years, with a lot of effort and enthusiasm put into it. A lot's been done and Rotoincisa has many cooperation agreements throughout the world, but there's still a lot to do… S.L.
“Once upon a time there were the old printing cylinders that, as time went by, ended up by making even the most beautiful and sophisticated rotogravure machine "heavy" and less competitive… Then someone came along and invented lightweight matrixes and the world of flexible packaging suddenly had new windows of opportunity and a future of development and prosperity”. This, exaggerating a bit, could be the story of sleeves for rotogravure and, I'm quite sure, that of one of the companies that's contributed the most to the success of this system around the world: Rotoincisa of Rho (Milan). Some ten years on from the first hesitant steps that were viewed with scepticism by those in the field, the use of lightweight matrixes for rotogravure printing has caught on virtually everywhere thanks to the great advantages they offer in terms of quality, logistics and, on a more general note, cost. Several different systems are now available on the market, with somewhat differing features, but it would seem that the system developed by Rotoincisa - with many years' experience in the field of engraving - has hit the mark, managing to combine flexibility with reliability and the minimum expenditure of materials. In fact, continuous developments have led to the creation of a wide evolved range of the product/medium that, initially made from nickel coated with copper, is now available in pure copper for the peel-off or disposable versions.
United we stand
The Rotoincisa method, however, doesn't stand out just for the special sleeve and master cylinder combinations used (air support cylinders), but also on account of the company's specific market approach. In fact, the company creates ad hoc realities via Rotoincisa Integrazioni, for the purpose of promoting the spread of the system. Not only can it supply the engraved lightweight matrixes, ready to be used, but even just the copper supports and the know how needed to allow others - printers or engravers - to produce their very own print matrix.
There's no doubt that this is a choice that opens the way to further development of the system, making it possible, first and foremost, to face the problem that many users have, i.e., not to have to depend on just a sole supplier.
Here, Rotoincisa Integrazioni has succeeded in bringing together a group of “competing partners” to form a chain of supply to suit the production needs of important printers and end users now using sleeves. The sleeve system is thus confirmed as one of the most interesting options for the rotogravure world, as is shown by the ever larger number of users worldwide and the fact that the very producers of printing machinery have, in some cases, already created new models that can optimise the use of lightweight matrixes, making it possible to fit (and remove) them on their machines.
Trasparente è meglio
Realizzare un prodotto innovativo per trarne un vantaggio competitivo sul mercato: questo l’obiettivo che ha spinto ISI-Plast ad adottare il polipropilene trasparente per la produzione di un contenitore hot-fill (riempimento a caldo) per alimenti. Il contenitore “MU” di PP chiarificato - disponibile in formati da 5,8- 3,8 e 3 litri - è stato ottenuto con l’impiego dell’additivo Millad 3988 della Milliken Chemical.
La struttura particolare con chiusura ermetica e la disposizione del manico facilitano il riempimento in linea, mentre la trasparenza facilita il controllo di processo.
Il Millad 3988 non rilascia aromi e può essere utilizzato per qualsiasi tipo di confezione per alimenti.
Sebbene ISI-Plast produca contenitori per prodotti medicali, vernici e cosmetici "gli imballaggi per alimenti – commenta Massimo Borelli, direttore tecnico ISI-Plast - rappresentano il mercato con la crescita più rapida. Il Millad 3988 ci permette di competere sul mercato con un contenitore innovativo, robusto, a tenuta stagna e dotato di un'eccezionale trasparenza".
Transparent is better
Create an innovatory product in order to gain economic advantages on the market: this objective has driven ISI-Plast to adopt transparent polypropylene for producing hot-fill containers for foodstuffs. The “MU” PP clarified container – available in 5.8, 3.8 and 3 litre formats – was obtained with the use of Millad 3988 additive created by Milliken Chemical.
The special structure with airtight closure and the positioning of the handle facilitate in-line filling, while the transparency facilitates process control.
Millad 3988 does not release fragrances and can be used for any type of food pack.
Even though ISI-Plast produces containers for medical products, lacquers and cosmetics, as Massimo Borelli, technical director of ISO-Plast tells us ”food packaging constitutes the market with the highest growth. Millad 3988 allows us to compete on the market with an innovatory, sturdy, airtight container with an exceptional transparency”.
Bevande in bottiglie di PET
L’azienda tedesca Thüringer Waldquell di Schmalkalden (TWQ), Turingia, ha investito 13 milioni di Euro per l’acquisto di una Blomax 16, macchina per stiro-soffiaggio di bottiglie in PET della SIG Corpoplast di Amburgo. Il nuovo impianto viene utilizzato per imbottigliare acqua minerale e tra le altre bevande la popolarissima “Vita” Cola, bibita agli agrumi della Germania dell’Est dall’originale gusto rinfrescante, che è diventata la marca di cola più diffusa in Turingia e la seconda in tutti i nuovi stati federali. Attualmente TWQ è in grado di realizzare circa 20.000 bottiglie di PET da 0,5 l/h e, grazie alla nuova linea, ha aumentato la capacità produttiva del 30%. Questa applicazione è destinata ad aprire nuove strade per il futuro, visto che fino ad ora in Germania l’utilizzo del PET ha conquistato solo il 15% del mercato potenziale.
Soft drinks in PET bottles
The German company Thüringer Waldquell (TWQ) of Schmalkalden, Thuringia, has invested 13 million Euro in acquiring a Blomax 16, a machine for the stretch-blowing of PET bottles manufactured by SIG Corpoplast of Hamburg. The new equipment will be used for bottling mineral water and, among other soft drinks, the very popular “Vita” Cola, a soft drink made from citrus fruits from East Germany with an original refreshing states. It has become the most widespread make of cola in Thuringia and the second in all the new federal states. At present, TWQ can manufacture around 20,000 x 0.5 litre PET bottles per hour and, thanks to its new line, has increased its production capacity by 30%. This application is destined to open up new roads for the future, since up to now the use of PET in Germany accounted for only 15% of the potential market.

Launched last year by Cartiere Favini (Favini Group), the elegant Aralda text&cover collection has been presented in a new promotional set, with sober and sophisticated graphics, comprising: Demoprint, Mini Campionario and Maxi Campionario.
The lively images chosen for Demoprint highlight the excellent print yield and the workability of the paper in all techniques. Its features (natural ivory color, delicate smoothness with a marked matt finish) make it suitable for many applications such as publishing, price lists, menu cards, quality brochures, reports, greetings and invitation cards, calendars, etc. Aralda – slightly smooth or laid – is available in the Normal version (from 85 to 280 g/m2); Label, in only one weight (85 g/m2), designed for labels, and in the Wet strength (damp-resistant and tear-proof) and Grease proof (natural papers resistant to greasy and oily substances).

Uno studio sui tappi di sughero
Sabaté, azienda di spicco nella produzione di tappi di sughero e chiusure alternative con componenti di sughero, ha avviato un progetto di collaborazione con istituzioni britanniche del settore vinicolo, per lo studio e lo sviluppo di nuovi prodotti enologici. Il programma prevede una serie di test scientifici sugli ultimi sviluppi di "Altec", il primo tappo con base di sughero introdotto sul mercato da Sabaté nel 1995. Attualmente è in corso uno studio dal duplice scopo: acquisire dati su cui impostare le prossime ricerche su Altec e altre tipologie di tappi, nonché fornire informazioni analitiche utili alla comunicazione e commercializzazione del prodotto.
Il lavoro è stato commissionato a Cube Communications, che ha impostato e gestito su una scala senza precedenti un esperimento analitico e organolettico. La sua validità e oggettività sono garantite dal coinvolgimento, nella giuria di degustazione, di personalità di elevato profilo, incaricate di ratificare procedure e protocolli. I primi risultati confermano la validità dell'Altec ultima generazione, caratterizzato da un diverso livello di permeabilità qui individuato come elemento cruciale per la conservazione del prodotto. La sperimentazione prevede quattro tappe fondamentali. Il vino sottoposto ad analisi, fornito e imbottigliato da Waverley Vintners, è stato sottoposto al vaglio preliminare della giuria di esperti, che comprende, fra gli altri, i responsabili acquisti delle principali catene distributive britanniche. A study into corks
Sabaté, a leading producer of corks and alternative closures made from cork, has started a project in cooperation with British institutions in the wine sector to study and develop new products for the wine industry. The program involves a series of scientific tests on the latest developments of "Altec", the first cork-based top introduced on the market by Sabaté in 1995. A study is currently underway with a dual purpose: to acquire data to be used as a basis for future research on Altec and other types of top and to provide useful analytical information for product communication and marketing. Cube Communications has been commissioned with this study and has organised and carried out an analytical and organoleptic experiment on an unprecedented scale. Its validity and objectivity are guarantee by the involvement of high profile people in the tasting jury, entrusted with ratifying the procedures and protocols. Initial results confirm the validity of the latest Altec, featuring a different level of permeability, identified as crucial when it comes to preserving the product. The experimentation is split into four basic stages. The wine to be analysed - supplied and bottled by Waverley Vintners - is subjected to an initial screening by the jury of experts (which includes, among others, the purchasing managers of the leading distribution chains in the UK). Then 2,640 bottles of wine (half red and half white) are closed with 6 different types of closure. The tasting and analysis take place some 1, 4, 7, 10 and 13 months after bottling; 528 bottles are analysed at each stage, and another 132 per type of wine are tasted by the jury. Finally, all 2,640 bottles are analysed by an independent structure - the Campden & Chorley Wood Food Research Association (CCWFRA), the UK's leading food research lab - bearing in mind the various different critical parameters of quality.

The manufacture of the range is preceded by two processing stages, extrusion and heat-moulding, carried out with the aid of a large number of presses.

Eastman Chemical Company ha recentemente lanciato il copoliestere Eastar AN001, una resina idonea alla formazione per iniezione e stiro-soffiaggio di contenitori per il settore cosmetico e della cura della persona.
Scott Rook - business market manager divisione Cosmetics and personal care di Eastman - sostiene che «le aziende della cosmesi erano alla ricerca di un flacone a costi competitivi in grado di contenere prodotti di alta qualità e di veicolare il look e l’immagine che in genere si associano al vetro». Rook fa notare che, grazie all’impiego della resina AN001, le bottiglie ottenute per iniezione e stiro-soffiaggio hanno pareti più spesse (fino a 10 mm) rispetto a quelle ottenute con il PET (2-3 mm), mentre il colore e la trasparenza è migliorata notevolmente (91% della quota di trasmissione della luce) se confrontata con quella del PET (81%).
Alcune importanti società del comparto hanno già apprezzato l’impiego di AN001 nella produzione di flaconi a parete spessa contenenti lozioni per il corpo e il make-up.
La nuova resina, viene presentata, insieme a un’altra novità, in occasione del prossimo Luxe Pack di Monaco.
Copolyester for cosmetics
Eastman Chemical Company announces the introduction of Eastar copolyester AN001, an injection stretch blow molding resin for the cosmetics and personal care markets.
Scott Rook, business market manager for Eastman’s cosmetics and personal care markets said, “Cosmetics companies were looking for a cost-efficient bottle, capable of packaging high-quality products that can deliver the premium look and feel of glass without the associated cost of glass”.
Rook added that injection stretch blow molded bottles made of AN001 resulted in much thicker wall sections (up to 10 mm) as compared to using PET (2–3 mm), and the color and clarity is significantly improved (91% light transmission rates) compared to those (81%) for PET.
The market has already accepted AN001 for thick-walled bottles containing body lotions and makeup by major brand owners.
Eastar copolyester AN001 will be one of two new products unveiled to the Luxe Pack show in Monaco.

Marking machines for all characters
For marking with small and large characters, Tradex offers the Rea-Jet line of ink-jet machines, which come in four main models. These systems are designed and built to be used in difficult conditions, and for this reason they are fitted with waterproof and dustproof controllers and print heads, with IP 65 protection level. The fast Rea-Jet machines use inks containing no solvents and ensure excellent results on many types of surface. They also have a simple and intuitive programming interface, as well as a modular structure which speeds up the time needed for maintenance and replacement of components (including ink cartridges), reducing the machines’ down-time. The machines can be used both individually or integrated into complex computerised company systems. The range includes the Rea-Jet model LA and the three LC, LK and PK models for large characters. These last three machines are differentiated by the height of the characters - from 5 to 67 mm for the first, up to 48 mm for the others – and supports they can handle: the versatile and economical LC is suitable for all types of substrata, while the LK and PK print at high resolution, with excellent results respectively on absorbent and porous surfaces.
