Nel nostro Paese, lo scorso anno, il numero di “rotazioni” delle cassette a rendere Euro Pool System è più che raddoppiato. Merito dei grandi buyer stranieri di ortofrutta italiana e delle grandi catene distributive attive nel nostro Paese che, “fatti i conti”, sempre più spesso delegano al “circuito blu” l’intera gestione logistica degli imballaggi.
Ortofrutta e prodotti di quarta gamma: questi i settori in cui operano in prevalenza gli utilizzatori italiani delle cassette Euro Pool System, mentre nei Paesi europei, dove il contenitore riutilizzabile è conosciuto da più tempo, sono state progressivamente adottate anche per il trasporto di uova, latticini, insaccati e carne. Sta di fatto che, in centro-nord Europa, l’interesse verso questo "prodotto-servizio" è alimentato dalla diffusa cultura ambientalista, che proprio nel riuso identifica uno degli strumenti primari per ridurre alla fonte i volumi di imballaggi immessi al consumo.
"I numeri comunque confermano - sostiene il business manager di Euro Pool System Italia, Massimo Valagussa - che, superate alcune diffidenze iniziali, anche in ambito nazionale il ricorso ai pool operator è in crescita, come diretta conseguenza di un approccio diverso al problema dei trasporti e dello stoccaggio delle merci.
E, in questo senso, non va sottovalutato l'impatto derivato dall'ingresso degli stranieri, che hanno ridisegnato la mappa della distribuzione nel nostro Paese e che hanno portato "in dote" nuove filosofie gestionali".
Ma ciò che sta sostenendo alle diverse latitudini la diffusione di questo tipo di contenitore (e dei servizi annessi) sono i vantaggi economici che, dati alla mano, è in grado di generare.
L’exploit italiano
"L’anno scorso - afferma Valagussa - il nostro volume d’affari è più che raddoppiato. Per la precisione, il numero di rotazioni (i cicli completi consegna-uso-ritiro-lavaggio, Ndr) è aumentato del 120%, e non solo su pressione dei grandi clienti del Nord o delle catene distributive straniere. Oggi, piuttosto, il maggiore impulso al noleggio viene dal fatto che il trade stia vivendo una fase di competizione molto accesa, che influenza al ribasso i prezzi e incide quindi sulla riduzione dei margini operativi, spingendo di conseguenza a razionalizzare le attività. In quest’ottica, dunque, una logistica delle merci più efficiente può comportare vantaggi consistenti. In particolare, imballi riutilizzabili come i nostri diventano protagonisti di un processo di ampio respiro, in virtù della loro standardizzazione, capace di agevolare tutte le operazioni di movimentazione interna. Una considerazione questa valida sia sul punto vendita sia presso il centro di distribuzione, dove le fasi di preparazione degli ordini, di smistamento e di successiva consegna della merce possono essere organizzate secondo schemi coerenti con le necessità di risparmio, velocità, sfruttamento ottimale degli spazi. Nella pratica Euro Pool offre un servizio completo di gestione delle cassette che, oltre a evitare al cliente giacenze a magazzino, garantisce la possibilità di “modulare” la fornitura a seconda dei picchi di lavoro, e riduce drasticamente i volumi dei contenitori vuoti durante il trasporto (le cassette blu sono perlopiù a sponde abbattibili). Ma non solo: ci facciamo carico del ritiro, della sanificazione e della rimessa in circolo dei contenitori, evitando così al nostro cliente le operazioni di riciclo e gli oneri relativi".
L’efficienza del circuito è sostenuta dalla disponibilità di cinque centri di raccolta e smistamento dei contenitori, localizzati nelle aree “calde” della produzione ortofrutticola italiana (Trentino, Romagna, Lazio, Puglia e, tra poco, Sicilia), tre dei quali attrezzati con moderni impianti di lavaggio. Che, ovviamente, si integrano perfettamente nel circuito Euro Pool degli altri Paesi, permettendo di sfruttare tutte le potenzialità di un network internazionale, per organizzare un ciclo ininterrotto di consegne e ritiro di cassette.
Un software per
fare chiarezza
Un ausilio importante alla promozione dei servizi Euro Pool è offerto da un software messo a punto per aiutare l’utilizzatore a valutare costi ed economie degli imballi a perdere e a rendere. Si chiama Scope (Supply Chain Optimal Packaging Economizer) e “dimostra” che, se correttamente gestita, una logistica basata sui contenitori riutilizzabili può generare risparmio. Sviluppato in collaborazione con l’Institut für Verpackungs-Technik dell’Università di Dortmund e avallato dal prestigioso Fraunhofer Institut, Scope aiuta a misurare i costi nascosti determinati dalle inefficienze e dalle lacune della catena logistica.
"È un modello matematico - precisa Valagussa - che aiuta a individuare i punti critici, e dunque suscettibili di miglioramento, di un’organizzazione. Scope, infatti, “ragiona” in termini di sistema; tiene conto delle diverse voci di costo sostenute da una catena commerciale e le combina secondo una delle oltre 50 configurazioni di flusso memorizzate, permettendo di simulare le situazioni concrete e di individuare di volta in volta la soluzione di imballaggio ottimale. Il suo successo va di pari passo con il crescente interesse per i servizi di noleggio, sostenuto da più ordini di motivi. Oltre alle già citate esigenze di economia, vanno menzionate la maggiore consapevolezza sulle problematiche di impatto ambientale e, su un altro piano, il crescente numero di prodotti immessi sul mercato, fra cui sempre più freschi (dunque deperibili e delicati). Tutti fenomeni che portano di necessità a un processo di standardizzazione degli imballi, per contenere volumi e costi".
I vantaggi dell’outsourcing
I principali vantaggi economici assicurati dal sistema Euro Pool si possono dunque misurare in termini di minor costo del contenitore di plastica riutilizzabile e della sua gestione, anche a fine vita (azzeramento delle spese di compattazione, trasporto e smaltimento dei contenitori a perdere).
Ma non è tutto. Euro Pool System, infatti, non si limita a offrire contenitori a nolo ma effettua tutte le operazioni accessorie di fornitura, ritiro, sanificazione, sostituzione delle unità danneggiate e smaltimento, con procedure testate e approvate nei vari Paesi di transito. Infatti, il successo del provider olandese di servizi deriva dal fatto che i contenitori blu sono stati accettati dal trade (e, sempre di più, anche dall’industria) di tutta Europa, favorendo una circolazione di merci senza frontiere.

Blue crates: on the rise
In our country, the number of "rotations" of returnable Euro Pool System crates more than doubled last year. Credit is due mainly to the large foreign buyers of Italian fruits and vegetables and the large distribution chains operating in our country after a careful cost assessment, are increasingly assigning the entire logistical management of packaging to the "blue circuit".
Fruits and vegetables and fourth range products: most of the Italian users of the Euro Pool System crates operate in these sectors. In European countries, where the reusable container has only recently begun to make its appearance, the crates are used for transporting eggs, dairy products, and cured and fresh meats. The fact is that interest in this product-service has increased in environmentally conscious central and northern Europe, which views recycling and reuse as the main instruments in reducing the volumes of packaging issued for consumption.
"In any event – argues the business manager of Euro Pool System Italia, Massimo Valagussa - the numbers confirm that after getting over the initial suspicions, including right here on our market, the use of Euro Pool services is on the rise, as a direct consequence of a different approach to the problem of transportation and warehousing the merchandise. In this perspective, we can hardly underestimate the impact due to the entrance of foreign customers onto the market, who have redrawn the map of distribution in our country and have brought with them new managerial philosophies".
But supporting the spread of this type of container (and the related services) across the continent are the economic advantages that, shown by the recent data, it is able to generate.
Italian usage
"Our business - notes Valagussa - more than doubled last year. To be precise, the number of rotations (complete cycles of crate use-collection-washing, E.n.) increased by 120% and this was not due only to pressure placed by the large Northern European customers or by foreign distributors. Today, however, the strongest move toward hiring is being driven by the fact that trade is undergoing a very active phase of competition, that has driven prices down and therefore reduced the operating profits, consequently encouraging business to streamline activities. From this perspective, a more efficient merchandise logistics program would lead to significant advantages. In particular, reusable packaging such as ours are becoming important elements in a broad-ranged process by virtue of their standardization that can facilitate internal handling operations. This consideration is valid both for the retail sales outlet as well as the distribution center, where phases of order preparing, sorting, and subsequent delivery of the merchandise can be organized in accordance with arrangements that keep foremost time and cost savings, speed, and optimal use of the space. In practice, Euro Pool offers a comprehensive crate handling service that, in addition to eliminating overstocks at our customers' warehouses, provides the ability to modify the supply depending on operating peaks and dramatically reduces the volumes of empty containers during transportation (most of the blue crates have collapsible sides). But there's more: we handle the post-use collection, cleaning and sanitizing and return to circulation of the containers to save our customers the recycling efforts and the related charges".
The efficiency of the circuit is supported by the availability of five container collection and sorting centers, located in the regions of Italy with the densest fruit and vegetable production (Trentino, Romagna, Lazio, Apulia and, coming soon, Sicily), three of which are equipped with the most advanced washing systems. All, obviously, are integrated perfectly into the Euro Pool circuit in the other nations, to take advantage of all the opportunities offered by an international network to organize an unbroken cycle of crate deliveries and collection.
Software sheds light
An important aid to promotion of the Euro Pool services is provided by software designed to help the user evaluate the costs and savings of disposable and returnable packaging. It is called SCOPE (Supply Chain Optimal Packaging Economizer) and it "demonstrates" that, when correctly managed, logistics based on reusable containers can generate substantial savings. Developed in conjunction with the Institut für Verpackungs-Technik of the University of Dortmund and backed by the prestigious Fraunhofer Institut, Scope helps to measure the hidden costs determined by the inefficiencies and by the gaps in the logistical chain.
"It is a mathematical model - specifies Valagussa - that helps identify the critical points of an organization that would be susceptible to change and improvement. Scope reasons in "system" terms; it considers the diverse cost items incurred by a commercial chain and combines them in accordance with one of the more than 50 flow configurations memorized, which can simulate concrete situations and identify the most appropriate packaging solution in each case.
Its success has kept pace with the growing interest in hiring services, supported by several essential motives.
In addition to the economic reasons mentioned, Euro Pool meets the needs of greater interest in environmental preservation issues and, on another level, the growing number of fresh food products (more perishable and delicate) being introduced onto the market. All facts that lead to the need for a standardized packaging process, in order to limit volumes and costs".
The advantages
of outsourcing
The main economic advantages ensured by the Euro Pool system can be measured in terms of lower cost of the reusable plastic container and its handling, including at the end of its life (subtracting the compacting costs, transportation and elimination of the disposable containers).
But that's not all.
The Euro Pool System doesn't simply hire out the containers; it also provides all the accessory services to supply including post-use collection, cleaning, replacement of damaged units and final disposal, with tested and approved procedures in the various countries of transit.
For instance, the success of the Dutch services provider owes to the fact that the blue containers have been accepted by the trade (and more and more by industry, too) across Europe, encouraging circulation of merchandise while overcoming national barriers.

Il circuito delle cassette blu
Euro Pool System è nato una trentina di anni fa in Benelux come service di noleggio per cassette di plastica riutilizzabili e oggi dispone di filiali dirette, centri di raccolta e sanificazione in tutti i principali Paesi europei (in Italia la sede centrale è a Milano). Il circuito, caratterizzato dal colore blu dei suoi contenitori, noleggia pallet e cassette pieghevoli di plastica, riutilizzabili, per il trasporto di ortofrutta e altri alimenti (è sempre più adottato per carne, uova, latticini e insaccati). I suoi servizi sono certificati a qualità ISO e le attività di lavaggio rispettano tutte le norme HACCP.
In Italia i centri di raccolta e sanificazione dei contenitori sono dislocati lungo l’intera penisola, nelle più importanti zone ortofrutticole del Paese: imminente l’apertura del centro siciliano, nei pressi di Catania, da dove partiranno importanti lotti di prodotto per il Centro-Nord Europa. Tutti i depositi Euro Pool sono collegati al network informatico Euro Trace, che ne permette la gestione coordinata e integrata.
Fortemente standardizzati i contenitori che oggi vedono aggiungersi alle quattro famiglie “tradizionale” (rispettivamente da 60x40x24, 60x40x18, 60x40x13, e 40x30x16 cm) la nuova 610 che misura 60x40x10 cm. Prima di una nuova serie, una volta chiusa è alta solo 3 cm, ovvero la metà circa di una ripieghevole “normale”, consentendo un’ulteriore riduzione di volume del 70%. Inoltre, presenta un design rinnovato, dalle molte aperture sul fondo per una migliore ventilazione e conservazione del prodotto, una superficie liscia all’interno e all’esterno, e sponde laterali rinforzate per una maggiore stabilità.
Come negli altri contenitori pieghevoli del circuito, una meccanica speciale evita che possa richiudersi durante l’uso; inoltre la sua composizione e robustezza ne permette tanto il lavaggio meccanico quanto la totale riciclabilità a fine vita.

The blue crate circuit
Euro Pool System was founded about three decades ago in Benelux as a hire service for reusable plastic crates. Today it has direct branches and post-use collection and sanitizing centers in all the main European countries (in Italy, the central hub is in Milan). The circuit is characterized by the striking blue color of its containers, pallets for hire and collapsible or rigid plastic crates, all reusable and used to transport market garden produce and other foods (its popularity is also rising in meat, eggs, dairy products and cured meats). Its services are certified to ISO quality standards and the washing procedures comply with all the HACCP standards.
In Italy, the container collection and sanitizing centers are located throughout the peninsula, in the most important vegetable and fruit producing areas of the country. This coming October should see the opening of the Sicilian center, in the province of Catania, where substantial deliveries will be dispatched for Central and Northern Europe.
All the Euro Pool warehouses are connected to the Euro Trace computer network that enables coordinated and integrated handling.
The containers are highly standardized and today, the four "traditional" categories (respectively 60x40x24, 60x40x18, 60x40x13, and 40x30x16 cm) are being supplemented by the new 610 model that measures 60x40x10 cm. The first of a new series, the create measures just 3 cm high when closed, half of the size of a normal collapsible crate, reducing its size by another 70%. Furthermore, it has a brand new design, with numerous openings on the bottom for better ventilation and preservation of the product, a smooth interior and exterior surface, and reinforced sides for more stability.
Like the other collapsible containers of the circuit, a special mechanism prevents the crate from collapsing during use; in addition, its composition and durability allow it to be washed mechanically and make it fully recyclable at the end of its life.
