INTERNAL HANDLING Con una gamma di catene e componenti in continua evoluzione, Rexnord FlatTop punta su materiali innovativi per soddisfare le esigenze delle industrie alimentari e delle bevande, in termini di efficienza, igiene e ridotta manutenzione. D.B.
Meglio averla come alleata piuttosto che concorrente! Questo ha pensato il gruppo americano Rexnord FlatTop Chain quando, nei primi anni Novanta, decise di acquisire la Marbett di Correggio (RE). Nata nel 1968 come terzista specializzato nella progettazione, ingegnerizzazione e produzione di parti in resina termoplastica e stampi, la società emiliana negli anni era infatti cresciuta a tal punto da proporre un catalogo pressoché completo di accessori per nastri trasportatori: ingranaggi per catene, ruote folli, profili guida catene, guide di contenimento laterale dei prodotti in UHMWPE, sistemi di ritorno catena con rullini, guide a serpentina o pattini a strisciamento, morsetti e supporti regolabili per guide laterali, elementi di supporto della struttura del trasportatore.
Sia Marbett sia Rexnord (inventore tra l’altro delle catene TableTop® e produttore esso stesso di componenti per la trasmissione di potenza) ravvidero dunque nella fusione un importante momento di crescita e sviluppo.
«Il buon esito del “matrimonio” con Rexnord - spiega oggi Filippo Gallieri, marketing manager components Rexnord FlatTop - si deve in gran parte alla complementarietà della nostra offerta con quella dell’azienda di Milwaukee. Siamo riusciti infatti a integrare culture molto diverse, sposando la standardizzazione (tipica della realtà americana) con la flessibilità che contraddistingue l’impresa italiana». Il risultato? La creazione di molte proposte alternative sia nell’ambito dei componenti sia delle catene.
Una struttura multinazionale
Far parte di una struttura multinazionale può offrire diversi vantaggi. «Oltre al proficuo scambio di know how - prosegue Gallieri - crescono sia le potenzialità commerciali e finanziarie, sia le possibilità di cooperare con i vari costruttori per la soluzione di problemi applicativi. In genere progettiamo i nostri articoli a partire da problematiche specifiche, ma arriviamo poi a formulare proposte applicabili a diversi contesti industriali. In ogni caso, il principio guida è la modularità: utilizzando i nostri componenti, si può infatti facilmente assemblare un nastro trasportatore, riducendo al minimo le operazioni manuali, quali la foratura, la saldatura ecc.».
L’azienda, in particolare, sta puntando sull’impiego di materiali polimerici innovativi, in grado di assicurare alle catene di trasporto lunga durata, maggiore scorrevolezza, costi ridotti di gestione e manutenzione.
«Abbiamo adottato resine acetaliche o PP, nel caso in cui i componenti debbano operare in ambienti aggressivi, e di recente - puntualizza il manager - abbiamo proposto la resina acetalica PS (Platinum Series), un nuovo materiale plastico utilizzabile in tutta la gamma di catene (catene a tapparella e modulari), e in grado di offrire significative migliori prestazioni, rispetto ad altri materiali presenti sul mercato, in termini di usura ridotta e ottima scorrevolezza. Recentemente, però, abbiamo anche ampliato la gamma di componenti per nastri trasportatori con una nuova linea in acciaio inox, capace di offrire performance di eccellenza su tutti i trasportatori e in particolare alle industrie alimentari ulteriori garanzie di sanificazione e compatibilità con gli alimenti».
Approccio al mercato
Potendo contare su una rete di vendita e assistenza a livello mondiale, costituita da numerosi distributori e venditori diretti, Rexnord FlatTop segue le sempre mutevoli esigenze del mercato fornendo ai clienti risposte “in tempo reale”.
«A livello di offerta - commenta Gallieri - ogni sito produttivo del gruppo, pur trattando tutti i tipi di catene, è focalizzato su particolari nicchie di prodotto. Il sito olandese, ad esempio, è specializzato nella produzione di catene modulari e, grazie alla notevole esperienza acquisita, ha completamente automatizzato tutte le fasi di assemblaggio. Un fattore non trascurabile, questo, che assicura anzitutto un livello qualitativo costante e una ripetibilità non ottenibile con la manualità di un operatore. A Correggio, invece, prevale la produzione di catene a tapparella e di tutti i componenti (inclusi gli elementi livellatori e i supporti a cuscinetto flangiati) anche in questo caso apparati e processi all’avanguardia (automazione) garantiscono risultati di eccellenza in termini di qualità.
I vantaggi per l’utente sono significativi. Per ottimizzare i costi e risparmiare tempo, infatti, di volta in volta Rexnord FlatTop studia un piano logistico che consente di spedire il materiale dalla località più vicina all’utilizzatore finale (un semilavorato, ad esempio, potrebbe essere spedito e assemblato in uno stabilimento diverso da quello di origine).
Ma non è tutto. Il know how acquisito dall’azienda di Correggio nello stampaggio a iniezione e coiniezione di materie plastiche ha portato allo sviluppo di una linea di prodotti per ritorno catena che ha consentito di soddisfare, con largo anticipo, i limiti di rumorosità imposti da una normativa che entrerà in vigore nel 2006.
«Questo risultato - spiega Filippo Gallieri - è stato ottenuto sovrastampando con della gomma i componenti realizzati in materiale plastico tradizionale. Tra l’altro, la messa a punto di questa tecnologia sta favorendo l’ulteriore ampliamento del nostro catalogo».
Pianificare, guardando oltre
In un momento in cui molte aziende scelgono di delocalizzare la produzione, Rexnord FlatTop crede invece fortemente nelle potenzialità dei propri siti e della propria organizzazione.
«Con questa consapevolezza, la nostra struttura - continua Gallieri - è cresciuta nel tempo, credendo nella possibilità di un miglioramento continuo e presidiando il mercato con estrema flessibilità e prontezza di risposta. E la Ricerca & Sviluppo, in tutto questo, ha giocato (e gioca) un ruolo fondamentale, potendo contare su tre centri tecnici con laboratori dedicati. La competenza raggiunta ci consente oggi di guidare il cliente nella definizione dei progetti di ampio respiro, volti all’ottimizzazione dei percorsi logistici.
Eppure, è pur sempre ascoltando con grande attenzione la voce del cliente stesso che riusciamo a personalizzare i prodotti e, talvolta, ad anticipare risposte e tendenze.
Siamo inoltre convinti che i momenti di difficoltà possano essere affrontati guardando all’innovazione da un’angolazione diversa; di fatto non miriamo solo a lanciare proposte avanzate dal punto di vista tecnologico e che, grazie a prestazioni superiori, sappiano risolvere le problematiche più difficili. Nel nostro campo, innovazione può anche significare puntare alla “semplificazione” dei componenti, così che siano vantaggiosi, non solo da un punto di vista economico, ma anche perché intuitivi e facili da assemblare e da utilizzare».

Modular alternatives
INTERNAL HANDLING With a continuously evolving range of chains and components, Rexnord Flat Top aims at innovative materials for satisfying the needs of the food and beverage industry, in terms of efficiency, hygiene and reduced maintenance. D.B.
Better as an ally than as a competitor! This is what the US group Rexnord Flat Top Chain thought when at the beginning of the nineties they decided to buy up Marbett, based in Correggio (RE). Set up in 1968 as a service industry specialised in design, engineering and production of parts in thermoplastic resin and moulds, the Emilia based concern over the years has in fact grown to the point of offering a virtually complete catalogue of accessories for conveyor belts: chain gears, idler wheels, chain guides, guides for lateral containment of UHMWPE products, roller chain return systems, guides with curves or slides, clamps and adjustable supports for lateral guides, supporting elements for the conveyor structure. Both Marbett as well as Rexnord (inventor among other things of the TableTop® chain and also producer of the components for power transmission) experienced the merger as an important opportunity for growth and development.
«Our successful marriage with Rexnord - today Filippo Gallieri, Rexnord FlatTop Components marketing manager now explains - was for the most due to the complimentary nature of our product range with that of the Milwaukee based concern. We have in fact managed to integrate two very different cultures, marrying standardisation (typical of US concerns) with flexibility that features in Italian concerns».
The results? The creation of a lot of alternative proposals both in the field of components as well as in that of chains.
A multinational structure
Being part of a multinational structure can offer various advantages. «As well as a profitable exchange of knowhow - Gallieri goes on to say - it also provides both commercial and financial potential, as well as the possibility of cooperating with various constructors to provide applicative solutions. In general we design our articles starting off from specific problems, but we then get to formulating offers that are applicable to various f industrial contexts. At any rate modularity is the main guide: using our components, one can in fact easily assemble a conveyor belt, reducing manual operations, i.e. making holes, welding etc to a minimum».
The company in particular is aiming at the use of innovative polymeric materials, capable of ensuring the conveyer belts a long life, smoother running, reduced management and maintenance costs.
«We have adopted acetalic or PP resins for cases where the components have to operate in aggressive environments, and recently - the manager points out - we have proposed the acetalic resin PS platinum series, a new plastic material usable on all ranges of conveyors (slat and modular belts), and capable of offering considerably better performance compared to other materials present on the market in terms of reduced wear and excellent running. Recently though we have also extended the range of components for conveyor belts with a new line in stainless steel, capable of offering excellent performance on all conveyors and in particularly in the food industry offering further guarantees of sanitisation and compatibility with foodstuffs».
Market approach
Being able to count on a sales and assistance service at world level, made up of numerous direct distributors and salespersons, Rexnord Flat Top follows the ever-changing needs of the market providing its customers with responses “in real time”.
«In terms of our product offer - Gallieri comments - each production site of the group, while handling all types of conveyors, is especially focused on certain product niches. The Dutch site for example is specialised in the production of modular chains and thanks to a considerable experience built up, has completely automated all its assembly phases. A factor not to be underestimated this, that aboveall ensures a constant quality level and a repeatability that cannot be obtained with the hand of an operator. The Correggio site in turn is concentrated on the production of slatband conveyors and all components (including levelling and flanged bearing support elements), here too leading edge automation processes and equipment guarantee excellent results in terms of quality. The advantages for the user are considerable. To optimise costs and time saving, in fact for each separate situation Rexnord Flat Top studies a logistics plan that enables the shipment of the material from the nearest centre to the end user (a semiprocessed item for example could be shipped and assembled in a works different to where it was produced).
But this is not all. The knowhow built up by the Correggio concern in injection moulding and co-injection of plastics has led to the development of a line of products for chain return that has enabled the satisfaction ahead of time of the noise limits laid down by a standard that will come into force in 2006.
«This result - Filippo Galieri explains - has been obtained by “overmoulding” the components made in traditional plastic with rubber. Among other things, the tooling up of this technology has allowed us to further extend our catalogue of products».
Planning, looking ahead
In a moment in which many concerns are choosing to delocate, Rexnord FlatTop strongly believes in the potential of their existing sites and organization.
«With this awareness, our structure - Gallieri goes on - has grown in time, believing in the possibility of a continuous improvement and presiding over the market with extreme flexibility and readiness in response. And in all this R&D has played (and plays) a fundamental role, being able to count on three technical centres with dedicated laboratories. The knowhow we have attained enables us to guide the customers in the definition of broad-ranging projects aimed at optimising logistical runs. All the same, it is by paying the greatest attention to the voice of our customers themselves that we manage to personalise products and, at times, to anticipate responses and trends. We are also convinced that the moments of difficulty can be tackled looking at innovation from a different slant; in fact we do not only aim at launching proposals seen to be advanced from a technological point of view and that, thanks to higher performance, are capable of solving the most difficult problems. In our field, innovation can also mean aiming at “simplifying” components, so that they not only offer advantages economically but also because they are intuitive and easy to assemble and to use».

Il Gruppo Rexnord FlatTop Chain è leader mondiale nella costruzione di catene e componenti per nastri trasportatori per l’industria alimentare, delle bevande, del confezionamento e dell’automazione industriale.
Presente con le proprie soluzioni alla scorsa edizione del Drinktec, ha raggiunto a livello mondiale un fatturato di oltre 800 milioni di dollari, con più di 5000 dipendenti. Nel 1996, a cinque anni di distanza dall’ingresso della Marbett, un altro competitor, l’olandese MCC (leader nel campo dei trasportatori modulari) entra a far parte del gruppo. Nel 2003, a seguito di un’importante ristrutturazione, si decide di istituire un’unica società europea, Rexnord FlatTop Europe, con quartier generale in Olanda e due siti produttivi: uno in Olanda e l’altro in Italia, a Correggio, in cui lavorano 150 persone.
I clienti (costruttori di impianti, distributori e utilizzatori finali) vengono forniti con prodotti a stock o realizzati su misura. Assieme alla casa madre americana, Rexnord FlatTop Europe commercializza le sue tre linee Rex®, MCC® e Marbett® su scala mondiale. La linea Rex consiste in catene TableTop® di acciaio e resina termoplastica, catene modulari MatTop® e una grande varietà di componenti per nastri trasportatori.
La linea MCC® consiste in catene di acciaio e resina termoplastica, catene modulari, curve Magnetflex® Combi® e diversi componenti per nastri trasportatori.

The company and the products
The Rexnord FlatTop Chain Group is world leader in the construction of chains and component for conveyor belts for the food, beverage, packaging and industrial automation industry.
Present with its own solutions at the last edition of Drinktec, it has attained a turnover of 800 million dollars at world level, with more than 5000 employees. In 1996, five years on from Marbett’s entry, another competitor, the Dutch concern MCC (leader in the field of modular conveyors) became part of the group. In 2003, following on from an important restructuring, the decision was made to set up a sole European company, Rexnord FlatTop Europe, headquartered in Holland and two production sites: one in Holland and another in Italy, at Correggio, where 150 people are employed.
Customers - system builders, distributors and end users - are provided with stock or customised products.
Together with its US parent company, Rexnord FlatTop Europe markets its three lines Rex®, MCC® and Marbett® all around the globe. The head office is in Holland, while there are two production sites, one in Holland and the other in Italy. The Rex product line includes the TableTop® chains made from steel and thermoplastic resins, the modular MatTop® and a great variety of conveyor belt components.
The MCC® series include steel and thermoplastic resin chains, modular chains, Magnetflex® Combi® curves and various components for conveyor belts.
The Marbett® line offers: ROBO® support and levelling elements, MB® non-corrosive supports and chain-guide components, machine support and product guiding elements and various other components.
