Rosario Tornatore nasce nel 1938 ad Acireale, in provincia di Catania. In questa città inizia i suoi studi artistici, che proseguiranno a Roma, dove consegue la laurea in Architettura e Scenografia presso l'Accademia delle Belle Arti. Trasferitosi a Parigi, frequenta l'Ecole Supérieure des Beaux Arts e l'atelier Friedlander e Goetz, dove ha occasione di perfezionare nuove tecniche relative alla moderna calcografia. Sempre a Parigi, negli anni '6O, condivide le posizioni del gruppo Nouveau Réalism di Pierre Restany; anzi, le soluzioni sperimentate da Tornatore, alla ricerca di un linguaggio in grado di saldare figurazione e astrazione, si rivelano anticipatorie della sensibilità espressa da quel movimento.
Attualmente vive e lavora fra il Monferrato e Parigi.

[…] Tornatore porta alla ribalta del caleidoscopico teatro dell'arte moderna la visione di una realtà incommensurabile; le sue attuali "immagini" recitano un ruolo significativo nel processo di trasfigurazione, con cui l'artista intende ricreare le energie del cosmo e della psiche tramite un'immaginazione poetica, rivolta a configurare le possibili geometrie della natura della luce.
[…] Le "cosmocromie" di Tornatore, radiose partiture riuscite, rientrano nel solco della lunga tradizione del pensiero "luminologico" (dalle riflessioni metafisiche del Grossatesta alle cosmogonie ottiche di Cusano, dalle "uranografie" dei pittori del Seicento ai più recenti "buchi neri" di Vedova e alle "mappe astrali" di Kieffer).
[…] Nel circuito delle vertiginose emergenze spaziali del colore, delle parabole elicoidali dei tracciati lineari, delle verticali vettorialità delle forme, ogni elemento messo praticamente in atto da Tornatore per costruire l'immagine, tende al "lumen proprium": riflesso visibile di quel luogo della "lux", di per sé non figurabile in quanto assoluto prima e assoluto oltre, sulla cui soglia si è inoltrato lo sguardo visionario dell'artista […]

Rosario Tornatore was born in 1938 at Acireale in the province of Catania. Here he started his art studies, which he continued at Rome, where he majored in Architecture and Theatre Design at the Accademia di Belle Arti.
Having transfered to Paris, he attended the Ecole Supérieure des Beaux Arts and the Friedlander and Goetz studio, where he was able to perfect new techniques in modern chalcography.
In Paris in the sixties he shared the positions of Nouveau Réalism of Pierre Restany’s group; rather the solutions experimented by Tornatore,
in search of a language capable of combining the figurative and the abstract, were seen to anticipate the sensitivity expressed by that movement. He currently lives and works between Monferrato and Paris.

[…] In the kaleidoscopic theatre of modern art Tornatore highlights the vision of an incommensurable reality; his current “images” recite a leading role in the process of transfiguration, with which the artist intends recreating the energies of the cosmos and the psyche through poetic imagination, aimed at configuring the possible geometries of the nature of light.
[…] The “cosmocromie” by Tornatore, radiant, wonderfully-crafted scores, are part of the long tradition of “luminological” thought (from the metaphysical reflections of Grossatesta to the optical cosmogonies of Cusano, from the “uranographies” of the Seicento painters to the more recent “black holes” by Vedova and the “astral maps” by Kieffer).
